BREXIT

British exit refers to the UK leaving the European Union (EU). According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Peter Wilding coined the phrase Brexit.

WHAT IS BREXIT?

Mr. Wilding campaigned for the UK to remain in

the EU in June's referendum. He wrote about "Brexit" in May 2012, eight months before the then Prime Minister David Cameron had announced he would be holding a referendum.

The EU is an economic and political

union involving 28 European countries.

It allows free trade and free movement of people to live and work in whichever country they choose.

THE U.E.

The UK joined in 1973. If the UK leaves as planned on 31 October, it would be the first member state to withdraw from the EU.

On June 23 in 2016 the people of the United Kingdom voted in a referendum on whether the UK should leave or remain in the European Union.
