Definition of addiction

The word addiction means a situation in which the

organism needs a particular substance to function and develops a psycho-physical dependence on it.

Main addiction in the UK

Addiction in the UK

In 2013, the Centre for Social Justice determined that the level of addiction in the UK made it the "addiction capital of Europe." This includes the use of legal substances, mainly alcohol, and the use of drugs.

Main addiction in the UK

Prescription drugs are actually more frequently abused in the UK.

In many cases, people will develop an addiction when these medications are prescribed for pain or mental health conditions.

Studies reported that in the UK drug use has remained the same during the last years. But in England, Wales, and Scotland results have reported the highest prevalence of drug use in the past 10 years.

Main addiction in the UK

The most commonly used drugs have not changed over time. Cannabis is the most prevalent, followed by alcohol, cocaine and MDMA.

Alcohol addiction in the UK

“For example, northern European countries, where drinking to intoxication is more common, tend to have more alcohol-related problems and higher mortality than southern European countries, where drinking is more common and integrated into everyday life. "

A number of factors influence these differences. According to dr. Landberg, the main factor is probably related to cultural differences in drinking habits. People living in the northern regions of Europe, typically drink in a way that increase the chance of suffering from alcohol-related problems compared to those living in southern Europe.

Alcohol addiction in the UK

The most common reasons people use alcohol:

1. Stress

People going through a stressful period in their life could drink alcohol more often because it helps to avoid their negative feelings.

2. Accessibility

This is a very simple reason. People drink alcohol because it's quite accessible in most supermarkets and it's cheap.

3. Social Pressure

Social pressure is one of the most important reasons, because people are afraid of being isolated by their friends. Teenagers, in particular, are forced to drink more than they want in order to seem cooler.

4. For Fun

People generally tend to drink alcohol in order to have fun. Being drunk makes them feel happy and drinking alcohol with friends can be an exciting experience for them.

Conclusions

At the end of this work I learned a lot about drug use, and especially I understood that in every country where you live, often everyone is tempted by the use of drugs or alcohol.

Now days, teenagers are subject to continuous instigation by many factors, as we have already seen.

Each of us knows what is right or not, but anyway many fall into temptation, becoming addicted.

As we know, all addictions bring something negative, but it depends on how we deal with this situation.
