What are Koalas?

Figure.2

Phascolarctos cinereus

What are Koalas?

- Native Australian animal

- Live in eucalyptus forests of south-eastern and eastern Australia.

- eucalyptus trees are their home and main food source

- Belong to the mammal family, marsupials. Due to their differences they have been catorgised into their own group called Phascolarctidae

Figure.3

Let’s start with a question.

How have the 2019/2020 wildfires affected Koala population?

What are the threats to Koalas population

-Entire range of Koala habitat for a distance greater than 4,000km from Kangaroo Island, South Australia, to far north Queensland.

-Over one billion wildlife were killed during the fires, with a minimum of 25,000 of that wildlife being the Koala species.

-NSW alone reported having around 53,000 hectares of koala’s habitat of eucalypts forests and woodlands destroyed during the fires.

Figure.4

In February 2022, the conservation status was moved from vulnerable to endangered by the Queensland government

Which resulted in

BUT koalas are still listed as vulnerable in the IUCN, researchers state that this requires immediate attention

Now, let's Investigate other threats to this species

Figure.5

Background

Climate change

De-forestation to expand urban agriculture

Figure.6

What will happen if Koala's are not protected?

So what?

Figure.7

Tourism

Tourism

- Native animals are a very common reason for people around the world to travel internationally

- They make an appearance on many destination marketing Campanian’s

- Koala-based experiences bring in $1.1 billion to 3.2 billon into the Australian economy

-Life without koalas may cause negative affect on the economy and may lead to a decrease in international travel

Figure.8

Economy

Economy

- Koala-based activities bring in up to $3.2 billion annually

- Providing up to thirty thousand job opportunities for people in Australia

- Life without koala's may cause a negative affect to people of Australia careers and economy

Figure.9

Significance to Aboriginal communities

Signiant to Aboriginal communities

Figure.10

- The koala is associated with many spiritual and cultural traditions in Aboriginal Australian history

- If conditions worsen, the Indigenous custodians may lose connection with aspects of their culture, historic events and identity

Figure.11

Ecosystem

Ecosystem

Koalas feces provide nutrients for:

- Small mammals

- Insects

- Woodland growth and regeneration

Figure.12

Now, we that know the threats. What are we doing to protect these species?

- The Queensland government (2022) have introduced new koala habitat protection in February 2020

-This is to ensure the ecosystem for koalas is always improving and limit the risk of death or injury

Now what?

Figure.13

Koala Habitat Restoration Partnership

Let's Investigate

- The Queensland government has also funded $4.48 million to the Koala Habitat Restoration Partnership, which seek to restore over 180 hectors of damaged koala habitat

- Within this program they have planted over 169,935 koala food trees

Figure.14

Topic

Threat Management Activities

- They have also introduced threat management activities, which invests over $7.5 million in the SEQ Wildlife Hospital Network in 2016, with a continuing fund of $1.5 million yearly

- This management strategy entails to respond to koalas harmed by human and natural factors
