The Impact of Colonization on Australia and New Zealand

Both Australia and New Zeland were colonized by the British during the 19th century

Colonization of Australia

Title

While the colonization modernized Australia, the Aboriginal faced a lot of changes

1788-1986

The Aboriginal people are the Indigenous of Australia.

The colonization of their homeland had a lot of negative impact on them as the arrival of the British led to loss of population numbers.

The Aboriginal

Decrease in Aboriginal population after colonization

Around 20,000 Aboriginal people passed away due to slavery and labour.

When they refused, they suffered from physical and sexual abuse.

Slavery started in Australia during the late 1780's. Aboriginal people were used for pearling, sugar cane farming, cattle farming and domestic chores without receiving any pay.

Labour

Disease Introduction

Since they had no resistance, even the common cold really affected them

Disease Introduction

prior to the colonization, the aboriginal had no contact with the outside world. that is why, they did not have any resistance against diseases

New Zealand

Title

New Zealand was colonized by the British (as greater land ownership meant more influence on the world).

During the 1860s, the Maori faced loss of lands. The reason for the loss of lands were because lands were being used for development and for when the Maori rebelled against the british. This all happened despite the treaty of Waitangi.

Loss of lands

Treaty of Waitangi

The 'Treaty of Waitangi' was a treaty between the Maori and British which stated that both groups had equal rights for things like land and properties.

Effect on Maori

Due to this, Maori people were forced to live in overcrowded and unhygienic places. This had a negative effect on their health and nutrition. Living in such overcrowded spaces also contributed to the spreading of diseases

Diseases were introduced with the arrival of the British and passed on to the Maori with the trading of muskets and blankets. Since the Maori had no other contact with the world, they did not have any immunity to diseases

Disease Introduction

The colonizations

both Australia and New zealand were colonized by the british. the indigenous of both countries had a huge impact from the colonization.

Differences

The aboriginal population also decreased and a large factor was due to diseases.

Drop in population due to diseases

Introduction diseases

Both Australia and new zealand are countries located in the south pacific. since there are no other close neighboring countries, both indigenous groups did not have any contact with the outside world. this is why the introduction of the british and diseases had such effects on both populations.

Slavery and Labour

aboriginal people were used for farming, pearling and even domestic chores without any pay. when they denied, they suffered from physical abuse.

by the time New Zealand was colonized, slavery and labour was banned around the world. this is different compared to the aboriginal mainly because of times.

Treaty.

this difference is also due to the time difference of the colonizations. at the time of the Australia's colonization,a treaty was not compulsory but by the time of new zealand's colonization, a treaty was required.

new zealand had the treaty of waitangi which stated that both groups had equal rights on lands.

since the aboriginal did not have a document which stated that they had equal rights, they lost a lot of their own land.

Equal rights
