Capabilities

OEM & Custom Manufacturing: Molding Capabilities

Molding Capabilities

  Forte offers superb molding capabilities based on over 55 years of experience performing custom molding services, four (4) manufacturing facilities strategically located for easy access to/from any point in the US, state of the art equipment and a team engineers and qualified technicians with outstanding knowledge and expertise put to the service of our customers.

Some of the molding services we offer include rotational molding, injection molding, vacuum/thermoforming and fiberglass molding.

Rotational Molding

Rotational Molding

Molding Machine

Durable hollow parts

Plastic in powder form

Process

Rotational Molding Process

Plastic powder is poured into the rotational mold and then placed into the oven.

The mold is rotated in a biaxial rotation, ensuring the plastic coats the entire inside surface of the mold.

Once the plastic is melted completely the mold is then moved into the cooling phase.

After mold is cooled, the mold is opened, and the hollow plastic part is removed.

The hollow part is then deburred, trimmed, assembled, inspected, packaged and shipped to custome.r

Rotational Molding Advantages

Advantages

Low capital investment, great for market studies

Outside corners of the plastic parts build up thicker, making a more robust part

Design freedom, allows intricate geometry and maximum space utilization

Vacuum/Thermoforming

Vacuum/Thermoforming

Plastic sheet material

Formed plastic part

Process of heating flat sheets of plastic in an oven to a pliable state

The vacuum mold is then introduced to the heated plastic, vacuum is turned on and the plastic part is formed

Trim, assemble, quality inspection, package, and ship to customer

Vacuum/Thermoforming Process

Process

Lower capital investment compared to injection molding

Easy to prototype and quick to market

Multiple materials available with a wide range of colors, films (wood grain, chrome…), and textures for different applications

Vacuum/Thermoforming Advantages

Advantages

Plastic part

Plastic pellets

Injection Molding

Injection Molding

Injection machine

Injection mold

Process

Plastic pellets are heated to liquid form in the screw and barrel portion of the injection machine

Liquid plastic is then injected at high speed and high pressure into the injection mold

Plastic is then cooled to a solid state and the part is ejected from the mold and machine

Secondary work is then performed if necessary; quality inspections, assembly, packaged and shipped to customer

Injection Molding Process

Very high-speed production

Low-cost parts

Wide variety of plastics available to meet multiple applications

High quality, tight tolerance parts can be produced consistently at a very fast cycle

Injection Molding Advantages

Fiberglass mat

Open or closed mold tooling

Fiberglass Molding

Fiberglass Molding

Gel-coat

Open Molding

Open mold fiberglass is just that, apply gel-coat to an open mold, then apply fiberglass mat or chopped roving and resin to the gel-coat and open mold

The fiberglass part is allowed to cure inside the tooling

Once the part is cured, the part is pulled from the mold

Secondary processes are then performed, such as trimming, assembly, finish work, quality inspection before shipping final product to customer

Fiberglass Molding Process

Open Molding

Low-cost tooling

Low-cost lightweight strong parts

Gel-coat, durable highly cosmetic finish on one surface is achievable

Fiberglass Molding Advantages

Open Molding

Closed Molding

Closed molding (LRTM) uses both a top and bottom tool to create smooth consistent fiberglass parts.

Special fiberglass mat is placed inside the mold, with a poly-core center which allows the resin to flow between the layers of glass.

A computerized infusing machine pumps resin into the closed mold.

The resin is then allowed to cure and create the final part.

Closed Molding Process

(LRTM)

Closed Molding Advantages

Smooth high-quality surfaces on both sides of the part

Computer controlled process for better quality more consistent parts

Faster cycle times due to controlled gelling and curing

Lower emissions; as parts cure inside the closed tool

(LRTM)

Tooling/Prototyping

Tooling/prototyping

Tooling

Molds are made of several different types of materials, including aluminum, composite, high density foam and/or wood

Twin-Sheet molding requires special tooling and equipment and is used to create hollow parts

Pressure forming tools are used to create custom textures and features giving an injection molded appearance, but with lower tooling costs
