INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT

STEP 1

Survey and

Stats

Student Survey and Statistics

"In 2017, the second leading cause of death of teenagers was suicide " (Heron, 2019).

Suicide and depression have become an epidemic in our Nation's schools and it is important to create programs for prevention and awareness.

Even if you are not experiencing thoughts of suicide and self-harm, it is vital that you have the tools to successfully navigate negative times in your life -- you could potentially help a friend in need with the strategies showcased today.

The online student survey that you completed will help the Teen Hope team assess Monterey High School's needs.

STEP 2

Intro to MY3

What is MY3?

An app for your phone that gives you instant access to trusted friends and family members, prevention hotlines, your custom safety plan, and other useful information about suicide and self-harm. MY3 is an online, 24/7 support network!

STEP 3

App Setup

MY3 App Download

Use your QR scanner to quickly download the app!

If you don't have a QR scanner, go to your app store and search for:

MY3 -Support Network

Scan to download the app!

STEP 4

App

Customization

My3 App Customization

Now that you have the app downloaded, let's start exploring the information and setup process.

  • Choose your three trusted contacts
  • What characteristics make a suitable contact?
  • Reliable
  • Trustworthy
  • You feel comfortable with them

If you don't have three, that's okay -- the app even works without any personal contacts thanks to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

STEP 5

My3

Resources

Resources and Information

  • For suicide attempt survivors
  • Choose your resources
  • There are a variety of resources for diverse backgrounds; add the resources that best fit you to your app at this time:

  • A 24 hour teen crisis hotline

  • Provides a crisis line and suicide prevention

for the LGBTQ community

  • Assist in improving lives for individuals affected by mental illness

STEP 6

Handout

Dreams and Goals Handout

Quick Write: Let's take a few minutes to think about your goals, dreams, and things that you are proud of.

These can be goals that you are trying to achieve right now or in the future. Your dreams can be anything you want them to be -- even if they seem unrealistic. Anything that brings you joy in life can be something you're proud of!

STEP 7

Safety Plan

Your Safety Plan

Review your quick write activity -- you have so much to live for, so let’s make a safety plan...

Using the Safety Plan handout from the MY3 website:

  • Read through the steps
  • Ask yourself the bolded questions
  • Fill in your criteria on the "Safety Plan" tab on the MY3 app.
  • Email your custom safety plan to yourself and your three trusted contacts.

STEP 8

Prevention

How to Avoid Triggers, Negative Influences, and Cyberbullying

  • Awareness of your personal triggers through the analysis of your safety plan can help avoid trigger that promote suicidal/self-harm thoughts.
  • If you notice that certain people are generating negative, harmful thoughts in you -- find a more supportive person to hang out with!
  • Avoid situations where cyberbullying seems never ending (it's hard to avoid bullies that can access you via internet) -- block negative influences, take a break from screen time, or even consider shutting down your social media.

STEP 9

Ending

Stigmas

Ending the Negative Stigma

Depression and suicide are difficult topics to discuss because of the associated negative connotations, but it's important to discuss them as it affects a large portion of our population. The healing process begins when the conversation does...

STEP 10

One-on-One

Counseling

One-on-One Counseling

One-on-one counseling can be a useful tool for everyone, and we recommend getting in touch a counselor in the area!

Your school counselor is an incredible resource and we can help connect you as well.

Your counselor may end up being one of your three!
