Ethical Leadership

LEADER

Ethical Leadership is defined as a leadership demonstrating and promoting of “normatively appropriate conduct through personal actions and interpersonal relations” (Brown et al., 2005, p. 120). It has been reported to have positive effects on a range of follower outcomes including task performance (Bouckenooghe et al., 2015), perceived leader effectiveness (Brown et al., 2005), organizational citizenship behavior (Piccolo et al., 2010), work place deviance (Resick et al., 2013), ethical behaviors (Mayer et al., 2009), and prosocial behaviors (Kalshoven et al., 2013).

RESPECTFUL

Respectful

A leader has to work with different kinds of people coming from different kinds of upbringing, background, positions, class, and beliefs; therefore, an ethical leader would be respectful to everyone in order to prevent discrimination or creating a hostile environment in the workplace. Being respectful also extends to human rights, animal life and rights, and the environment. An ethical leader knows that all life is important and should be respected.

Empathetic

EMPATHETIC

It is important to reiterate that a business leader is responsible for his or her employees. He or she would have to make some decisions for their sake. For this reason, an ethical leader has to have the ability to feel for them in order to make decisions that would truly be good and humanistic for them. Being empathetic also extends to being socially responsible. An ethical leader knows that understanding society and humans is key to progress.

Transparent

TRANSPARENT

Transparency fosters trust and accountability. A leader's decisions and actions affect the lives of others, so it's important to be clear and open to them about what is happening inside the business to prevent fraud or accusations of fraud and dishonesty. By being transparent, an ethical leader diminishes all opportunities to challenge and compromise their integrity.

Fair and Just

JUST

An ethical leader should measure and weigh decisions fairly and justly to prevent bias and solve problems in a way that is fair to everyone involved. Employees will trust a leader that they know would listens to them and consider them in decision-making. Being just also prevents them leader from committing anything that compromises their integrity. Just like in Utilitarianism, everyone's happiness is being considered.

Mike Roman

POSSESSING

Mike Roman, the current chairman of the board and CEO of 3M, has all of the aforementioned qualities. Under his leadership, the company has been included on Ethisphere’s list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for eight straight years, and was also recently recognized by Fast Company as one of the Best Employers for Innovators. In 2017 3M won the prestigious Catalyst Award for its commitment to diversity and inclusion; Mike is also a Catalyst Champion for Change, joining other CEO’s who have pledged to accelerate inclusion. 3M provides safe and healthy workplaces and seeks to minimize the impact of its operations on the environment. The company also engages in fair trade. It is clear through Roman's decisions, he respects and empathizes with his employees, animal life and the environment. He also treats everyone fairly and is commited to diversity and inclusion. In 2020, e was also among approximately 80 MBP members who signed a letter to legislators encouraging them "to adopt policing reforms that address police misconduct and increase accountability and transparency". For all of these reasons, we can say that he is a respectful, empathetic, transparent, and just leader.

Jeff Bezos

UNPOSSESSING

Jeffrey Preston Bezos is the founder and executive chairman of Amazon, and currently the 2nd richest man in the world as of March 2022. Amazon has been subjected to several ethical controversies under his leadership. On respecting human rights: it was found that employees in Amazon warehouses worked 55 hour weeks/ 10 hour days on average, were expected to pack around 300 items per hour, and were harassed, disciplined or fired if they failed to meet their targets. Campaigners say that Amazon has fired at least six whistleblowers who have spoken out against the company’s poor practices since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Employees say they were fired after organizing petitions or protests about the lack of safety precautions at its warehouse facilities. On fairness and justice: he supported Trump's deportation regime. On transparency: UK lost £52 million from Amazon’s tax avoidance due to profit shifting alone despite being among the richest in the world. Therefore, wee believe that he does not possess the qualities we are looking for in an ethical leader.
