How did she become a saint?

  • Emma's pure integrity and care for the poor impressed the church so much. Therefore it was the Church's decision to make Emma a saint.

  • After the loss of her husband she moved to her land at Steipel and she lived there as she tended to the poor.

  • She was a great benefactor of churches, establishing many small parishes.
  • She was venerated as a saint following her death, but no offical date for it.
  • Her feast day is June 27th.
  • In 1008, Emma had a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which later became a popular place of pilgramage.
  • She is the patron saint of the Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt as well as of the Austrian state of Carinthia, and her intercession is sought for childbirth and diseases of the eye.
