China
- 3000 BC -written records of massage
- 200-101 BC - manuscripts discuss massage as treatment for illnesses
- Amma - style of massage developed with acupuncture; precursor to all other therapies
- 1st to employ blind massage therapists
- aprox 1 - 100 AD - all ideas & beliefs compiled into Yellow Emporer text aka Nei Ching
Japan
- 6th century BC - amma arrived
- practiced many centuries
- evolved into shiatsu "finger pressure"
- Shiatsu - same concepts as acupuncture and energy work
- Energy flow in channels - pain from blocked channels
- shiatsu uses body parts instead of needles to balance energy flow
- Performed on channels or specific points "tsubos"
- Tsubos are openings into channels
- also employed blind massage therapists
India
- massage goes back over 3000 years
- probably from amma being brought in
- integrated into Hindu tradition
- 1800 BC became part of ayruveda
- Ayruveda = code of life
- deals with rebirth, salvation, the soul, purpose of life, mainenance of mental health, prevention & treatment of diseases
- Texts - Samhitas & Manav Dharma both mention massage
Western World
- 6th & 7th centuries BC - concepts of health and medicine develop
- Asclepius - Greek physician evolved into a god - responsible for emerging medical profession
- 500 BC - Greece - techne iatriche = healing science
- Iccus & Herodicus - exercise & gymnastics
- Hippocrates of Cos - follwed techne iatriche - emphasized individual patient & that healer should not cause harm
- recognized as father of modern medicine
- founded medical school
- author - collective work - Corpus Hippocratium
- Aulus Celsus - De Medicina - bridged gap between his time & Hippocrates
- massage became so accepted Julis Ceaser used it to treat epilepsy
