By Christopher Paul Cutis
Prezi By Leslie Hernandez
This story's about a black family. There was four people in the Malone's family. They were Roscoe Malone, the dad, Peggy Malone, the mom. Then, Deza Malone, the main character, and her brother Jimmie.
The Main Character in this book is Deza Malone. She is a very strong and brave 12 year old, she tries to overcome all her problems in the story. She is also very smart/Intelligent, she's one of the smartest students in her school.
Deza Malone's two main character traits are:
Brave- Deza was brave because she was brave enough to go look for her dad after he went missing. At the end when her family found him, she was also brave enough to look at him all beaten up.
Kind- She was kind enough to return the pie that her brother, Jimmie, stole from one of their neighbor's house because they didn't have enough food to eat.
This book started in Gary, Indiana during the Great Depression. Later on when Roscoe Malone (the dad) is missing the Malone family moves to Flint, Michigan. Also in Lake Michigan. (Lake Michigan was the last place where Deza's dad was before he went missing)
- The Malone's family quote
Main Conflict/Problem
There were many Problems! But one main problem was when Deza's dad said he was going to Flint, Michigan to look for a better job. He promised to write back every week. Weeks passed and Deza didn't know anything about him. Deza's dad was missing.
One of the problems was the the Great Depression. During this time, there weren't many jobs for african americans.
The Malone family solved the main conflict by searching for Roscoe. The family went to Flint, Michigan and see if anyone over there have heard of him. The result of looking for him lead them to a poor house where they found Deza's dad all beaten up. After Roscoe got better the Malone Family went to "a place called wonderful." That was the Malone's family quote that gave them strength when they had problems.
The theme of the story is to never give up and that family should always stay together through tough times.
An example of this was when Deza, Jimmie, and their mother never gave up to find Roscoe. No matter what happened they kept looking until they found him.
