Annexation of the Midway Islands
Midway was quite literally the 'midway' point from the U.S to some Asian countries. Commerce, communications, and fueling ships was made easier due to the annexation of the Midway Islands.
There had been no indigenous people on the Midway islands until it was discovered in 1867 by Captain William Reynolds, so there were no opposing opinions about whether or not it should be annexed. Most people in the U.S, regardless of political party, were supportive of the decision since the annexation was beneficial to businesses, and it was a boon to the U.S navy's ships and in turn, national security.
The Midway Islands became very important to the military and to airplanes making transpacific flights. The Midway Islands created a convenient refueling stop, along with being an important stop for Navy ships.
