What is Chlamydia?

SUMMARY

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted diesease that can infect both men and women. If left untreated, it can cause serious damage to to female reproductive system. Chlamydia can also cause a fatal ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the womb).

CAUSES

What causes Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is caused by a bacteria called Chlamydia Trachomatis (truh-KOH-muh-tis), and is most oftenly transmitted by vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It is also possibe for pregnant women to spread chlamydia to their children during delivery, causing a serious eye infection or pneumonia

Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Painful urination
  • Vaginal discharge in women
  • discharge from the penis in men.
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Bleeding between periods and after sex in women
  • Testecular pain in men

Complications

Complicatons may include:

  • Infection near the testicles (epididymitis)
  • Prostate gland infection
  • Infections in newborns
  • Infertility
  • Reactive arthritis
  • Pelvic Inflammatory infection

Complications

Pelvic Inflammatory Infection (PID)

If untreated, chlamydia can spread to your fallopian tubes and uterus, causing PID.

  • Use Condoms
  • Limit number of sexual partners
  • Get regular screenings
  • Avoid douching

A urine test: A sample of your urine is analyzed in the laboratory for presence of this infection.

A swab: For women, your doctor takes a swab of the discharge from your cervix for culture or antigen testing for chlamydia. This can be done during a routine Pap test.
