What is the background of the story?
Bharati Mukherjee
Author, Bharati Mukherjee, was born in India, in 1940. In 1961 Bharati immigrated to the US a year after her sister to pursue her dreams as well. While in the US Bhararti earned an M.F.A. and a Ph.D. in literature. When she came to America she was almost identical to her sister in every way. Since being in America they have both changed.

Time Period
It is 1996 at the time and America is considering changing its policies on resident aliens. This was the reason for Mukherjee to write this story. Mukherjee is a legal immigrant so this possibility of change could affect her sister and herself.

Bharati's Narrative Hook
I found that Bharati's Narrative Hook worked on me because I am an American and she feels like she is too. I interpreted her hook as her way of saying she is an American before an Indian. It was also the way that she stated the differences with her sister in their beliefs that hooked me as well.

Rising Action.
The Rising action starts just after the first paragraph. She starts to explain her situation living in America. SHe states how her siset was nearly the same person when they left India. They both go to college when they move to America. Mer sister, Mira, gets married to an Indian man. This shows that Mira is still very attached to India
