Volleyball 1950's-1990's
Important rules initiated in the 1990's
- In the 1990's, atttacking the ball after being served became legal only if the ball doesnt pass the height of the net.
- The ball became able to contact any part of a players body.
- When serving of could only get one chance to get a perfect toss. At a high level this is understandable.
- The ball became allowed to touch the net when serving. I love this rule beacause when you tape the net on your serve it makes it hard for the defenders on the other side to recieve.
- Lastly one of my favorite rules that was initiated was the coach being able to give instuction during the game without inturrupting play. When you are maybe in a tight game for example sometimes you need that information from your coach to help you get out of that situation without using a timeout.

- The hieght of the womens net was lowered to 7ft 4in.
- Gloves became okay to wear during the game. People still wear things to prtect their hands from getting bruised up.
- The only people allowed to block were front row attackers. This still is a rule.
- In a game there could only be 12 substitutions. This is also still happening in the game of volleyball today.
- You could not create contact with the officials platform to save yourself form crossing over.
- In the 1950's there was a rule that substitutes were not allowed a warm up. I disagree with this statement because if someone that were playing was to get hurt, the subs are meant to fill in. Without being warm they could aslo get injured.
- Teamns were allowed to warm up during timeouts. This is not happening now.
- The teams would change courts halfway through the third set. After covid hit this has not continued.
- The rule of which the players had to be in a specific spot before the serve became.
- The rubber ball was ruled legal. People still use rubber balls just not as common.
- In the 1970's The rule of when a players gets called to enter the court from the down ref, you must continue with that rotation.
- Blocking and attacking at a serve coming to your side of the net became illegal. I love this rule because serves are supossed to be hard to recieve and to get that good serve it needs to be very close to the top of the net. In that case it makes it easy for somebody to block or attack at.
- The ball became able to contact any part of a players body.
- At this time, an addition to the net was added. The antennae.
- When the ball was "dead" the play ended. Thats kind of like the whole point of volleyball...

- The rules very officially written in different languages such as French, English, and Spanish.
- A rule that once you hit 17 the game was over. Now we go to 25 unless you go to a fifth set. Then it is to 15.
- You were allowed to make multiple contacs on the first hit but with only one attempt. This is still allowed now as well as a double on the second contact.
- In this time experimented with many rules to try and find ways to make the game of volleyball shorter. I feel like a regular game of volleyball is actually very long esspecially if you go to 5 sets.
