What is Tinikling? Tinikling is a type of dance that originated in the Philippines and is a type of Philippine Folk dance that uses different movements together with bamboo sticks and makes it into a great dance. When the poles slide together the dancers step in between and over the bamboo sticks while dancing.
Here's a video on what it looks like

The main elements of Tinikling are space and time . When doing tinikling you need space in between the dancers and the 2 bamboo poles if there is a big group performing tinikling then there also needs to be a space in between the dancers. timing is also something you need when doing tinikling. Time also is an important element in this dance. When doing tinikling time is important because in order to dance correctly you need to be in sync with the people controlling the bamboo sticks and your partner (if you have one).
The Tinikling dance originated years ago and is one of the oldest dances from the Philippines. This dance originated in one of the islands of Leyte and has many stories on how it may have been formed, here is one that I found. The first story states that Spaniards from Spain invaded the Philippines and forced the natives to work in the fields to please the Spaniards. For 392 years the People of the Philippines were working for the Spaniards. During their work they were supervised by the Spaniards to look for anyone who wasn't working fast. The slow workers were moved out of the fields and punished, the punishment was that 2 bamboo sticks with thorns on them would be laid on the floor and then they would move towards each other with the slow worker in between them. The bamboo sticks would then slam into the victims feet leaving their foot bruised and maybe bloody. This is one of the multiple stories on how it came to be.
The name Tinikling was inspired by a bird species called the Tikling or Buff-banded rail (in English). The Tikling birds movements looked similar to those punishments in action so that's why they called the dance the Tinikling dance when it turned into a dance. Other stories explain the origin of the dance and name better than this one but they all of the stories say that the bird was the inspiration for the name were based on the bird.
Here are some pictures of some things explained in the last 2 slides.

The role that the tinikling dance has is being the national dance in the Philippines. This dance is known by most Filipinos and most Filipinos know how to do it.
