Rising action

Summary

The rising action of "Joey" is when Speckles helps Joey around the paddock. At first when Joey was alone, he ran into some electrical wires. Normally you would think that this is strange, but he is not any horse he is a blind horse. This made his life a lot harder and difficult. To solve this problem Kim hung up wind chimes for him, so this wouldn't happen again. They also fixed the wires. To make sure that nothing else would happen to Joey they got him a pasture-mate. That was Speckles. At first Speckles was being rude to Joey and not letting him eat. He soon became more sincere and let Joey be free. Soon after this the two horses became inseparable. Speckles would guide Joey around the paddock, keep him out of danger, and protect him. When Kim started seeing this she knew that Speckles was the perfect horse for Joey.

Climax

The climax of the story is when Speckles dies. While Lauren was training Speckles she noticed that he kept on rearing up and getting very angry at her. She soon realized that this was not normal. They brought him to the vet to find out that he had very bad arthritis in his legs, and that is why he was so hard to train. A few months later they found him laying on the ground whining in pain, so they brought him to the vet. The vet said that his arthritis was a lot worse and they couldn't do anything for him. Kim, the owner of Hope Reins, decided to take him out of pain and put him down. This was a very hard decision regarding how much he helped Joey out, but she stuck with it for the good of Speckles.

Falling Action

Falling action

The falling action is when Joey has to adjust to life without Speckles. After Speckles' death Joey had to adjust. He acted very sad and depressed. He wouldn't move all day, and he would stay in the same place. Joey also didn't really eat at all, which was concerning to the volunteers at Hope Reins. Kim started trying to give him different pasture mates. None of them were working. They either didn't like each other, or they couldn't be separated. After a while they stopped trying, and started training him. This seemed to make him feel better. After he knew a couple of commands he started sessions again. The volunteers at Hope Reins realized that after Speckles had died Joey was helping more children. One of the many kids that Joey helped was a girl named Allie. She road Joey bareback. While Sarah was guiding the horse she got a feeling to stop she thought that God was telling her these things. She stopped and then offered if Allie wanted to ride Joey all by herself. She excepted the challenge. It took her some time to find her voice, but soon enough she worked up the courage to direct the horse with vocal commands. This is so significant because Allie didn't like talking. After this Joey was found one morning on the floor crying in pain. They called the vet to come, and the vet diagnosed Joey with a case of colic. A few months later this happened again, so they brought him to the vet again. There they got the bad news that he had Colic again but it was a lot worse. They made the decision to put Joey down.

Resolution

After Joey's death everyone was in disbelief. They had a memorial for Joey at Hope Reins. During the memorial people who got healed by Joey gave speeches. They also wrote on black and white balloons and released them into the sky, so that Joey could see them while he was in heaven. They did this on black and white balloons because Joey had black spots. They all realized how much Joey did for many people in his life. They realized that Joey was sent by God to help multiple people. A few months after the memorial they got a new horse. Her name was Selah. Kim said in the end of the book that there is not a day that goes by that Joey is not thought of.

Background story

Background story

The background story of Hope Reins is really cool. When Kim had a dream to start a company that would help children that were hurting connect with a horses. In these sessions the kids would be able to help groom and take care of the horse. Depending on the horse, the child could ride it. At first Kim was very sad because she thought that her dream would never come true. This is because when she was looking for the land that she needed it was around a million dollars, and she didn't know where all that money would come from. Luckily she asked her church if she could use their land because next to the church there was a few acres of land. The church said that she could have the land as long as she paid a couple of dollars each month for it. She excepted and started building. At first she was having fun, but then she realized that she would be using all of her money. She kept on going. To draw people in she put up a sign on the road. I believe the sign is still standing there today. Kim started getting horse and volunteers to come in . In the middle of the story she almost has to shut down because she ran out of money, but her wonderful volunteers helped her come up with ideas to save the farm.

Setting

The book takes place in early 2010 at Hope Reins. Hope Reins is the farm where they house all of the horses. Most of the book takes place here. Hope Reins is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Hope Reins is a nonprofit organization that connects hurting kids to rescued horses. This is also where they take care of the horses. There are many fields including two paddocks where the horses are living.

Joey

Characters

Joey is the main character in the book"Joey". Joey is a Appaloosa horse. He is blind, and when he was younger he was a racing horse. Joey was also neglected by a horse hoarder. He soon went to a place where he could get adopted. In the book Joey helps kids mental. Joey was a wonderful horse who helped many people. Sadly at the end of the book Joey has to be put down because he had a bad case of colic. Colic in horses is when they get really bad abdominal pain. Joey's case was really bad because his digestive system stopped working.

Speckles

Speckles

Speckles was another horse at Hope Reins. In the book Speckles helps Joey around his paddock. Speckles was a pasture-mate with Joey. They were best friends and inseparable. For example when one of the horses were taken out of the paddock they would make whinny noises back and forth to each-other. Speckles was a very stubborn and rude horse at the beginning of the book. This was because he was being abused before he came to Hope Reins. Speckles had really bad arthritis in his legs, this was so bad that he had hurt some people because he was in so much pain. Sadly Speckles too had to be put down in the middle of the book because he was in so much pain. This affected a lot of people around him, but most of all this affected Joey. After Speckles had died Joey had a hard time adjusting to the life without Speckles.

Kim

In the book "Joey" Kim is the owner of Hope Reins. This all started when she had a dream to start a business where struggling children could come and have therapy with a horse. She had the idea that it would be a non-profit business and she wouldn't charge a penny for the sessions. At first she was worried that her dream would never happen because she wouldn't be able to find land, but lucky her church had land that they would let her have if she paid a couple of dollars for it. She excepted the offer and started building. In the middle of the book Hope Reins almost had to shut down because they were running out of money. She kept on telling her self to worry and trust in God, but she always worried and didn't trust in God. Kim also made a good effort to make Hope Reins based on Christianity. Because of this they prayed before each session/day.

Sarah & Lauren

Sarah and Lauren were both trainers in the book "Joey". They are inportant because they helped Kim out a lot throughout the book. In the beggining of the book Lauren traines Speckles to share. This might not sound like a big thing, but at first Speckles wouldn't let Joey eat. To fix this Lauen would be fearless and stand up to a horse that she didn't know. She would make Speckles wait his turn. Lauren is a mother of 2 children, and is in her 40s. Sarah is in her mid 20s. Sarh is a girl who in the begenning didn't really beilieve in her faith. She ws also a session leader of a little girl named Allie. Allie wouldn't talk, and one day Allie became brave enough to tell Joey to walk. Sarah and Lauren both helped train Joey to be a wonderful horse.

God

God played a big role in the book "Joey". God helped Kim follow her dreams. He also helped open opportunity for Hope Reins. Throughout the book he makes miracles happen like helping children find their voices again, or helping adults have a stronger connection with him. God was always with them. The volunteers would pray before each session. They would also say little prayers for themselves throughout the book. God also guided Kim to the right decision when she didn't know what to do. I think God saved Hope Reins.

Genre

The genre of the book "Joey" is nonfiction I know this because the events in this book happened, and the characters are real. I also know this because in the book they mention the name of the place, and where it is located.

Genre

Opinion

I really enjoyed reading this book. I would say that this is in my top five of my favorite books. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a really good and touching book about a horse who helps others see. What I mean by this is helping people feel better and see how wonderful their life is. The only bad thing about this book is that there are a few sad chapters, but otherwise it is a really good book.
