Gastrostomy Tube

Lilian Hushie

To demonstarte that before I can adminster a G-tube feeding on a pateint. The mechanics and anatomy is understood.

What is a Gastrostomy tube

Also known as a G-Tube,

it is a tube that is inserted directly into the stomach to provide intake of food, water and medications.

Babies

Who gets a G-Tube

There is no age limit a baby/infant, adult or older adult can all have a G-tube

Adult

Older Adult

When is a G-tube needed

A G-tube is needed when there is an issue with an inidivual that prevents them or makes it difficult for them to use their mouth for intake of substances. such as medications , water or food.

Some example of when a G-tube is needed is when an indiviaul suffers from a condition (s) such as

-Dysphagia ( difficult swallowing)

-GERD

- Narrowing of your esophagus also knows as Esophageal Strictures

-Gastroinstentional Cancer

-Instentinal Failure

Although the conditions I mentioned above can effect babies , in most cases for babies a G-tube is needed when there is problems of the mouth , esophagus or stomach at birth

Or sucking and swalling disorders

Why is G-Tube Needed

A G-tube is needed so an individual can obtain nutrients and subatcnes to sustain life.

It is needed to avoid the difficulties that arise from intake through the mouth such as aspiration, coughing when the mouth is being used, pain when swallowing.

it is needed for people who cannot take adequate amount of meals by mouth to stay health

Where does a G-tube Go

Placement

A G-tube is placed directly into the stomach. It is Located on the pateints left upper quadarant on the abdomen.

How is a G-tube placed

Procedure

A G-tube is place with a surgical procedure called an endoscopy.

An endoscopy is when a small tube with a camera on it is inserted through the mouth down the esophagus into the stomach for visual.

From there the doctor will make a cut on the left upper quadarent of the pateint and insert the G-tube through the cut into the stomach. Stitches are then used to close the stomach around the tube

Need to know Information

Although G-tubes are a long term solution In some cases they are not a permenant fix

They are used until a goal is reached such as appropriate weight gain or a pateint learns to intake through the mouth again

FYI

In some cases a G-tube can be removed or it will be left there is a back up plan

Feeds are given from a bag with a thin tube attached to it with a nozzle that is inserted into the feeding port

Feeds are not meals like chicken or poatoes they are liquid drinks like resources 2.0 or 1.5 depending on the pateint

Feeds are specific to every individual, Doctors create the order based on tolerance and needs of the pateint

Positioning matters when feeds are being adminstered a pateint should be sitting at a 90 degree angle or emesis or aspiration can occur
