Explanation of the stages of labour and delivery.

by Tanishka

Labor and delivery, also known as childbirth, is a complex process that can be divided into several stages. These stages include:

First stage

Early Labor

Also know as the Latent Phase is the beginning of labour when the cervix starts to thin out and open. Contractions last around 30 to 45 seconds, occuring at intervals of 5 to 20 mins which can be considered mild and irregular

This phase can cause mothers to have mood swings between feeling excited and anxious

Active labor

The active labour has more regular and intense contractions that lead to the cervix opening more. Contractions are longer, stronger and closer together, typically lasting around 45 to 60 seconds and occuring every 3 to 5 mins.

Transition is the shortest but most intense phase of labour where the contractions are very strong lasting around 60 seconds to 90 seconds occuring every 2 to 3 mins.

The cervix is dilated to around 8 to 10 cm. The mother can be feeling exhausted and feeling of wanting to give up

Transition Phase

Pushing stage

The second stage is when the cervix has fully opened ( 10cm) Contractions become less frequent but more intense, the mother is now trying to push the baby through the birth canal. This stage can last from just a few minutes to several hours.

Second stage

Delivery of the Placenta

third stage

The third stage is after when the baby is born and now the placenta needs to be taken out. Contractions continue but are much more milder compared to ealier stages. The placenta is separated from the uterine wall and is expelled from the body then doctors/nurses will monitor the mother for any signs of excessive bleeding throughout this stage
