The Art of the PB&J

By: Ethan Kaufman

Ingredients

Before making the perfect sandwhich, the artist requires the tools to create it.

The Spread

  • A variety of jams or jellies can be used in the sandwhich.
  • The most common jelly to be used is grape, but strawberry is also acceptable.
  • In terms of the peanut butter, preference of smooth, creamy, or chunky is dependent on the consumer.

The Bread

  • A multitude of breads can be used to make a PB&J.
  • While many have different preferences, the most traditional form of the sandwhich uses white bread.
  • As long as a quadrilateral shape is used, any type of bread is used.
  • Whole wheat and multigrain are also okay.

Supplies

  • Once the ingredients are collected, there must be the necessary tools to make the sandwhich.
  • The following tools are necessary: a tough surface to cut on, a knife, and plate.
  • The tough surface can be a counter top or cutting board
  • Any form of knife will do, whether it be plastic or metal.
  • A plate will be needed at the end in order to present the dish

Supplies

The Spreading

Spreading

  • The PB&J must first be separated into two sections to be spread, the peanut butter on one piece and the jelly on another.

1. Using the knife, first spread the jelly on to the first slice of whitebread

2. Then, use the same knife and spread the peanut butter onto the other slice of white bread.

3. On each slice of bread, do not use too much of either product, as each should be balanced in quantity. Spread horizontally from edge to edge of the bread.

Building

  • Once each slice of bread is appropriately dressed, layer the jelly on top of the peanut butter.
  • It is important to place the jelly over the peanut butter and not vice versa, as the jelly is typically lighter and easier to flip than the peanut butter.

Cutting

  • This step is entirely optional.
  • One can cut the crust of the sandwhich and/or choose to cut the sandwhich as a whole.

Cutting

Crust

  • To cut the crust, align the knife with the edge of the crust on one side. Slice through each side of the bread until there is no crust left.
  • Discard the cut crust.

Crust

The Sandwhich

Bread

  • Regardless of whether or not the crust is cut, it is important to cut the sandwhich as a whole.
  • The sandwhich can be cut diagonally from corner to corner, vertically from top to bottom, or horizontally from end-to-end.

Enjoy!

  • After building and cutting, make sure to plate your sandwhich and it's time to enjoy!

Enjoy!
