HIGH CONTEXT

HIGH CONTEXT

CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH CONTEXT CULTURE

  • Value traditions.
  • Foster long-lasting relationships.
  • Rely on non-verbal signs such as tone of voice, facial expressions, body language, and so on.
  • Tend to be non-confrontational and more in-direct. Rejection is to be interpreted from non-explicit communication.
  • Require little explanation.
  • Are more collective. The identify lies with the group. Value group harmony.
  • Have stronger boundaries, i.e. one belongs with a certain group.
  • Are slow to change.

LOW CONTEXT

CHARACTERISTICS OF LOW CONTEXT CULTURE

GERMAN

SCANDINAVIAN

AMERICAN

ENGLISH

FRENCH

ITALIAN

  • Tend to make many shallower, short-term relationships.
  • Require explicit communication since they lack additional context.
  • Communication is more direct and confrontational.
  • Are more individualistic. Identify lies with the individual. Value individual needs.
  • Require all the information in the message.
  • Can change quickly

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?

The differentiation between high and low context cultures is meant to highlight differences in how cultures communicate.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

High-context cultures will use communication that focuses on underlying context, meaning, and tone in the message, and not just the words themselves.

low-context cultures expect communications to be explicitly stated so that there’s no risk of confusion, and if a message is not clear enough, it will slow down the process of communication.

The values are beliefs and norms accepted by a society which is distinct from our cultures.

FACTORS

The norms of public behaviour are another important aspect of culture which relates to public appearance.

PROGRAMS

STRATEGY

CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION

Will a company in Japan appreciate your attempts to get right to the point? Will a German company become bored if you talk around a subject, instead of directly addressing it? Know your audience and their cultural standing, and your message will never get lost.
