The Apostle's Creed

What is a Creed?

A statement of belief

- How do we define it?

- How do we use it?

- How many do we have in the Lutheran Church?

To have a basis upon which

we build our faith

What is a Creed?

3 (Apostles, Nicene, and

Athanasian)

God

First Article

"I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth."

What do we think of when we hear the word "Father"?

"Father almighty"

How do we understand God as a creator?

"Creator"

Jesus

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

Second Article

On the third day, he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

If we understand ourselves as God's children, why do we say that Jesus is God's only son?

"God's only Son"

Why is it important to say that God was incarnate?

Incarnate

"Rose Again"

Why is it important that we confess that Jesus rose from the grave?

The Holy Spirit

Third Article

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Sustainer

"I believe that by my own understanding or strength I cannot believe...but the Spirit has called me through the gospel...and kept me in true faith." -Martin Luther

Church

Do some parts of this portion of the creed sound like things we do in worship?

Why do you think this is put in the Holy Spirit's part of the creed?

The creed also gives us language for what happens beyond our lives, into the eternity beyond our earthly world.

Eternity

What does this Creed mean for us?

What now?

- Provides a basis upon which we can build our own understanding of faith

- Gives us language of how we can understand the Holy Trinity

- Invites us to be actively thinking about what our faith means for us in our time

Let's take that invitation to heart!

In small groups, we'll discuss language we might use to describe God in ways we don't see in the creed.

First Article

I believe in God, our Holy Parent, who creates all things and calls them good.

I believe in Jesus

Christ, the Holy One who

lived among us, the prophet who spoke of justice and peace for all people, the man who was arrested, unjustly tried, and killed, only to rise triumphantly on the

third day.

Second Article

Third Article

I believe in the Spirit

of Truth, the Holy Spark of Imagination, the Wisdom of the Ages which keeps us in love. In its witness to this Holy Trinity, I believe in the beautiful, flawed effort of the Church on earth and the life that is yet to come. Amen.
