Plot Summary

The story begins with a young girl named Amari Peters. Amari is struggling with the sudden disapperance of her brother, Quinton. Along with losing her scholarship because of trouble at school, Amari feels lost. After being delivered a strange briefcase that is from Quinton, Amari finds an invitation inside to the same summer camp Quinton attended. Except this isn't a regular summer camp, it's a magical summer camp! Determined to find out what happened to her brother, she sets out on a journey in this magical new world filled with dragons, trolls, yetis and evil magicians. Now to find out what happened to Quinton, she must compete against other kids with supernatural powers, but it is not easy. Amari's supernatural power is considered "illegal," and she faces many trials along the way because of it.

Discrimination & Bullying

Throughout this book, there are several times we see discrimination and bullying. Mostly, we see it happen to Amari. First, she is bullied at Jefferson Academy because she is there on a scholarship and does not fit in with the other students. Then, we see her treated as an outcast by several people in the magical world because she is a magician which is illegal and has a negative image. Many people did not think she deserved to be there because of it. Reading Amari's story helps the reader see first hand the experience of being bullied and treated differently for something that is out of your control. It gives readers a new prespective and can teach empathy.

Discrimination & Bullying

Bravery and Resilliance

We see Amari show bravery and resilliance. Amari faced a lot of adversity and trials, emotionally and physically. Being away from her mom, not knowing what happened to Quinton, and being in a completely new world where she is treated badly is incredibly scary. She shows she is brave by perservering and staying true to herself admist everything going on.

Bravery & Resilliance

Family and Friendship

Family and friendship was a big theme in this book. Amari is close with her family and values it a lot. One of the true friends that sticks with Amari throughout the book was Elsie. Elsie was treated like an outcast in the magical world by some like Amari because of something she could not control. They bonded quickly and always looked out for each other. Elsie took care of Amari and helped her with her mission to find out what happened to Quinton. Amari also showed she was a good friend by encouraging Elsie, and looking out for others, even when they did not treat Amari well.

My Reflection

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I thought the author did an excellent job on bringing this magical world to life. Reading this story I felt like I was immersed in this other world filled with magical creatures and powers. I thought this was a sweet story and that Amari's character is a great role model for kids. Amari showed that she is brave, resilliant, and true to herself even when she was seen as different from everyone else. It also showed an example of what true friendship is. For Amari, this friend is Elsie. Elsie was also different from others, but she was always there for Amari. I think this is important for kids to see. True friends are hard to find, and it's important to make sure you are being a true friend yourself. This book talks about bullying and discrimination which are two important topics especially for younger kids. I think this book would be a great read for middle schoolers.
