He is the spirit of light and peace manifested in human form. As the Avatar, Aang controls all four elements (water, earth, fire, and air) and is tasked with bringing balance and keeping the Four Nations at peace.
Before the Fire Nation's attempt at air bombing the air temple (the declaration of war), Aang's home. It was tranquile and the home of many monks.
At first, Aang doesn't want to have the responsibility he just wants to be a normal kid because he is too immature to have that kind of power. He is very reluctant to accpeting the role.

This occurs when he goes back with his friends, Katara and Sokka to the Southern Water Tribe to teach Katara water bending. It is realved that the Avatar has returend. He finally meets the antagonist, Pirnce Zuko who raids the tribe in ordor to capture Aang so he can bring honor to his father, the almight Fire Lod Ozai. The reason being he got bannished for showing weakness.
Throughout the episodes, Aang is tested with many road blocks. He also gains serveral imporant allies such as Katara, Sokka and Toph. In order to overcome the many challenges his friends also played a crucial role in helping him become fit for the Avatar.
He enters the inmost canve when he, Princess Azula and the Earth Kingdom encounters the Fire Nation. He is able to acheive the Avatar state for the first time and deats the enemy
As the Hero approaches the cave he must make final preparations before taking that final leap into the great unknown.
At the end, Koh reluctantly frees ang of his chakras so he is able to access the avatar state more easily. In this case the prize is the removal of a physical obstical. He is now able to fight the almighty Fire Lod Zuko on par.
Now that he is back in his world, Aang and his friends have infiltrated the Fire Nation. They are able to get inside the great walls.
Just as Aang was about to commence the attacks on the Fire Nation. He awaked on a very strange and mysterious island that he soon discovers is the legendary lion turtle. He tries to get answers on how he can defeat the Fire Lord without actually killing him reason being he still wants to follow the non-violent air monk heritage.
After the defeat of the Fire Lod. He discovers that he doesn't have to kill him inorder to bring peace back to the world. He accesses the avatar state and is able to restor peace.
