300 B.C - Egypt

Egypt had a focus for manual labor. It was noted that there were traces of sports like hockey and swimming.

B.C - Early Civilization

200 B.C - Rome

Rome had a much bigger focus on soldiers in the military exercising.

400 - 500 A.D -Middle Ages

A.D -Middle Ages

There wasn't much exercising or interest in physical education, because during this time it was seen as an evil and banned, because people would gamble for sports competitions.

Renaissance

Because of this new-found science, exercising was seen as a good thing, as it was proven to help with good health. Yet only the upper class could take part in physical activities such as dance.

During this Era nationalism and gymnastics started to come hand in hand. German gymnastics had a concentration that was more power and military driven. Sweden's gymnastics focused more of a graceful approach to gymnastics.

Mid 1800s

England made the "gentleman amateur" view of sports quite popular, with their creation of many modern sports such as rugby.

In 1879 Dudley received his M.D from Yale University and was also directing gymnastics at Yale. He's one of the first to teach gymnastics at several Universities.

Delphine Hanna is the first female that's hired as a full-time professor of Physical Education at Oberlin College

Due to the constant head injuries in football; Teddy Roosevelt called for the creation of the National College Athletic Association

The emphasis on nationalism and sports returned with US sports being seen as much weaker than European sports

With the stock market crashing, collegiate sports interest was lessened immensely. This caused a setback in sports and colleges all together

For the first time, fitness tests were required to enlist into the military. This was due to the fact so many people that were trying to enlist were very out of shape

Jackie Robinson is the first African Amercan to break the color barrier in MLB by joining the Brooklyn Dodgers

The President's Council on Youth Fitness was created by President Eisenhower to help promote a better fit lifestyle for Americans

1972 - Title IX

1972

The title IX prohibits discrimination in education programs. This was monumental in Women's Collegiate sports as for so long women weren't held at the same pedestal as Men's Collegiate Athletics.

1990 - IDEA

The "Individuals with Disabilities Education Act" helped in banning discrimination upon students with disabilities. This also meant that students with disabilities had the right to physical education and could not be discriminated against just because they had a disability, in regards to extra curricular sports activities.

In 2016, NFL football player, Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem as a way to peaceful protest to bring awareness to the racism in USA and the police brutality in USA

2020 - NBA Protest

In 2020, several NBA teams decided to boycott in response to the killing of Jacob Blake who was a victim to police brutality.
