Child Find

Child Find is one way that a student can be identified for needing services. The typical age of a child recognized by Child Find is 0-3. People who can refer a child to Child Find include pediatricians, day care providers, and social workers.

A referral is the first step taking in a public school setting to get the IEP evaluation process started for a child is may be suspected as having a learning disability. The referral an come from a parent or a teacher.

Procedural Safe Guards

A student can only be evaluated after the student's parents have granted permission. It is the district's responsibility to send the assessment plan and a copy of the procedural safeguards with 15 days of the referral. In turn, parents have 15 days to approve and consent to the evaluation.

Assessments will vary per evaluation as the student will only be evaluated in areas that the suspected disability effects. or example, a student with a dyslexia may not need to complete a behavioral assessment. IDEA lists various tools, tests, and strategues that must be used when conducting an special education evaluation.

Eligibility Determination

Eligibility can be determine after all assessments have been completed. If the child is determined as eligibility the Child Study Team will begin the IEP process by scheduling a meeting. In order to be eligible for services, a child must have one of the disabilities defined by IDEA and the impact of the disability must create a need for services.

Specific Learning Disability, Speech and Language, Other Health Impaired, Mental Retardation, Emotional Disturbance, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Multiple Disabilities, Developmental Delay, Hearing Impaired, Orthopedic Impaired, Visually Impaired, Traumatic Brain Injury, Deaf and Blindness.

IEP Meeting

The meeting will be planned in a private location and typically lasts about 1 hour. The meeting will start with introductions. The parent will alos sign a copy of the procedural safeguards. The pyschologist will share all assessment results, teacher reports, and cureent levels of performance. Next, the team will discuss the students eligibilty. The whole team must agree on this decision. If the student is determined as eligible, the team will share goals, objectives, modifications, and accommodations. The meeting wiull end with the parent signing additional forms to finalize everything spoken about at the meeting.

The entire IEP process can legally take up to 60 days to complete. The IEP should be develped as a team, which would include the parent. Finalization of the devlopement of the IEP should take place at the IEP meeting.

Progress Monitoring

All schools use a silently unqiue system to track and collect data on IEP goals. However, typically benchmark and progress monitoring reports are completed in December, March, and June. Typically, for academic goals, the special education would track and collect data to ensure the student is making adquate progress on their goals.
