University Policies

How can we help?

"F" Policy

Repeating Courses

If course is needed for degree, must retake at LSU or in the LSU system

Incomplete Grades

Students may not repeat a course in which a grade of “C” or higher was earned without approval from their college.

If course is needed for degree, must appeal to the college granting the degree to request to take the course for a third time

Work which, because of circumstances beyond the student’s control, is incomplete, may be marked “I” (incomplete) with the dean’s office representative’s permission.

The process to request an incomplete grade is outlined in the LSU General Catalog or contact the CHSE Office of Student Services.

Final Exam Changes

What is your major?

Grade Exclusion Policy

Comprehensive Academic Tracking System (CATS)

  • If a student has earned a “D” or an “F” in a course at LSU, s/he may be eligible to invoke the Grade Exclusion Policy.

  • If implemented, when the course is retaken and completed the initial grade earned is no longer factored into the student's GPA.

  • Students are allotted 3 grade exclusion requests for a maximum of 12 hours during their undergraduate careers.

  • Not all courses are eligible for the Grade Exclusion Policy

  • Students must complete grade exclusion paperwork in 236 Peabody by the last day to add in the semester in which they are retaking the course in order to request to invoke the policy.

  • Entities outside of LSU (e.g., TOPS, financial aid, graduate/professional schools) may not honor the Grade Exclusion Policy.
  • University policy requires that a student be allowed to change the date of a final exam when one of the following conditions are met:
  • Student has 3 exams covering more than 7 hours in a 24 hour period
  • Student has 2 final exams scheduled on the same day at the same time
  • The last day to request final exam changes is typically the last day to drop/resign for the semester
  • Students in CHSE can contact the Office of Student Services to initiate the final exam change request. Students in other colleges should contact their college to initiate the request.

  • CATS is designed to help you reach academic success at LSU and make sure that you are progressing towards graduation each semester.

  • Each major and concentration has a RECOMMENDED PATH that is the optimal path to graduate in four years.

  • Your journey with CATS begins by reviewing the RECOMMENDED PATH which can be found in the LSU General Catalog.

  • Students can view their CATS Status on their MyLSU Account.

  • Students who are not making academic progress at midterm and/or the end of a fall or spring semester will be sent an email and must meet with a counselor to get their CATS hold lifted.

  • Students who are “off track” two consecutive semesters in the same major may be required to change majors.
