The Battle of Fort Sumter

Introduction

  • The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the civil war. It took place on July 21, 1861 near the city of Manassas, Virginia.

Who Won the battle

  • The Confederates won the battle. That's also how the civil war began.

Why was this battle important

  • This battle was important because if the confederacy didn't attack Fort Sumter there would be no chance that the confederate states would still exists today.

Why did the battle of Fort Sumter happen

  • Its happened because the south states seceded from the union. Because they also considered themselves independent.

How did the battle start.

  • Fort Sumter was attacked near Charleston, South Carolina by the Confederate States Army, and the return gunfire and subsequent surrender by the United States Army, that started the American Civil War.

What Happened

  • The Union army was composed of only 80 soldiers, while the Confederates had 500 soldiers.
  • Anderson surrendered the fort at 2.30 pm, April 13.
  • The battle of Fort Sumter lasted until April 14 because the evacuation of the fort took place on the last day.

Fact #1

  • When new President Abraham Lincoln told South Carolina’s governor that he, too, would try to supply U.S. troops at the fort, South Carolina demanded all U.S. troops to leave Fort Sumter immediately.

Fact #2

The attack on Fort Sumter brought four more states to join the Confederacy. With Virginia's secession, Richond was named the Confederate capital.

Fact #2

Although there were no casaualties in the battle, there was one Union arttilleryman that was killed and three people who were wounded when a canon had exploded prematurely during evacuation of the fort.

  • South Carolina had seceded from the United States on December 20, 1860 and multiple other states began to follow their lead.
  • The newly inaugurated Abraham Lincoln was forced to take action.
