History of Health Care

Ancient Times

-The Egyptians were the first to create medical records. They also created the Eye of Horus, which symbolizes protection, royal power, and good health. Pharaohs had many specialists. Egyptians did many medical practices such as closing wounds and setting fractures.

-The Jewish did not do any medical practices. They relied on God to cure their illnesses and were superstitious like Egyptians.

-The Chinese did medical practices like acupuncture and bloodletting. They believed that their ancestors cursed them with illnesses. They also wrote medical documents.

Greeks and Romans

-The Greeks were the first to study diseases. They eliminated superstition. They also created aqueducts. Hippocrates was the Father of Medicine and stressed good hygiene, diets, and exercise to prevent illness.

-The Romans also created aqueducts. They were the first to organize medical care.

Dark Ages

-Medicine was practiced only in convents and monasteries during the Dark Ages. They realized that diseases are contagious and crusaders spread many of them. They also relied on God to cure them. Quarantine laws were passed to separate the healthy from the infected. There were many epidemics such as the Bubonic Plague, smallpox, and measles.

Renaissance

-Knowledge of health care and medicine greatly increased during the Renaissance. Medical schools, universities, and book publication were created. They dissected human bodies to learn about internal parts of the body. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci studied the anatomy of the human body. Causes of disease was still a mystery to them.
