How does it happen?

Histological aterations observed

1. Conjunctival phenotype is normal, with a moderate number of goblet cells

2. Affected conjunctiva.

3. Affected cornea.

4. Excised conjunctival specimen shows mild epithelial keratinization with irregular acanthosis together with intraepithelial and subepithelial mononuclear cell infiltration and vascular proliferation.

  • Epithelium transformation
  • "moist" mucal-type to dryer variant
  • Non-keratinized stratified epithelia to non-secretory cutaneous keratinocyte-like

What is metaplasia?

  • Tissue changes - somatic cells
  • Squamous metaplasia - Abnormal differentiation.
  • Where? Ocular surface of conjuctival and corneal epithelium.

Causes of that metaplastia

Reversible or Irreversible?

  • Chronic inflammation/irritation
  • Vitamin A deficiency - health of the mucosas
  • Zinc deficiency - possibility
  • Autoimmune diseases

-Sjögren´s Syndrome

-Cicatrizing conjunctivities

  • No cure - treatable
  • Example - Amniotic membrane
