MICROPLASTICS

By Emaan

WHAT?

Micro plastics are tiny bits of plastics. They are often too small to be seen by the naked eye. These plastics are usually a result of larger plastics breaking down

how do you save the world from micro plastics?

you can reduce micro plastics in everyday life by: buying organic clothes, avoid single use plastics, buy plastic free cosmetics, use public transportation and vacuum regularaly.

HOW is it related to plastic pollution and marine pollution?

Micro plastics are lighter than normal plastics so they end up getting blown away into the soil and sea. Not only that but when larger plastics are left in the enviournment, they get broken down into micro plastics. These end up in the organisms body and have the same affects as normal plastic pollution.

How do micro plastics affect the air?

Airborne microplastics are efficient at scattering sunlight, which implies a cooling effect on climate. However, they can also absorb radiation released by the Earth, which means they contribute, in a very small way, to the greenhouse effect.

WHAT AFFECTS DOES MICRO PLASTICS HAVE ON HUMANS?

micro plastics have been shown to cause damage to human cells. when this happens, it can cause individual cell death and if a large amount is lost, ther can be tissue and organ failure, ultimatley leading to death of thew organism.

How it started?

How?

Belgian chemist and intelligent seller Leo Baekeland launched the first fully synthetic plastic in 1907. Naturally, this leaded to the discovery of microplastics as microplastics are the result of larger plastics decomposing.

WHEN were micro plastics invented?

WHEN?

Tiny pieces of plastic, commonly referred to as microplastics, were first described in the early 1970s.

WHY did Micro plastics production start?

Why?

When regular plastics came, so did microplastic as microplastics are just the breakdown of larger plastics.

WHO is responsible for micro plastics?

WHO?

Textiles, tires and city dust make up to 80% of micro plastic pollution and the other 20% is the result of decompostion of lager plastics. But who caused these sources? Humans! Governments that can make and enforce rules, companies that produce or use plastics and consumers.

HOW have micro plastics affected the enviournment?

Marine microplastics will affect many aspects of the marine fish and marine food chain. The microplastics can have a toxic effect on fish and other aquatic life, including reducing food intake, delaying growth, causing oxidative damage and abnormal behavior. Microplastics have even be found in tap water. Moreover, the surfaces of tiny fragments of plastic may carry disease-causing organisms. Microplastics can also interact with soil fauna, affecting their health and soil functions. This will effect the food chain and therefore cause animals to die out.

POP QUIZ!

Quiz!

What are micro plastics?

Q1

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that result from both commercial product development and the breakdown of larger plastics.

ANSWER

Where are micro plastics most found

Q3

Micro plastics are found in plastic packaging, toys etc. They are also found in the soil and sea and inside living organisms.

ANSWER

How are Micro plastics made?

Q4

ANSWER

Micro plastics come from larger plastics and commercial products.

How do micro plastics affect ecosystems?

Q2

answer

Micro plastics affect the soil fauna making it hard for crops to grow. In addition, marine life consume microplastics which kills them. The result to all this is disruption to the food chain which could lead to extinction to different animals.

Where is the most affected place because of micro plastics?

Where?

Microplastics are in lots of products, such as baby bottles, toys, textiles and food packaging. Also, Micro plastics from these products end up in the ocean and in the soil. When we eat food that have been affected by the soil, micro plastics also end up in US.

How do micro plastics contribute to the past?

Past

Micro plastics have been used in the past by industrial abrasives used in sandblasting and microbeads in facial scrubs and still do to this day. Also, micro plastics have contributed with global warming as micro plastics make a small portion of greenhouse gases.

How will micro plastics affect the future?

Future

If we continue to use micro plastics at the current rate, ocean plastic will outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050. Sea birds, turtles, seals, and other marine life are all affected by plastic. They often experience starvation as their stomachs fill with litter or they become restricted by plastic.
