Our Starting Point

Our starting point

We started with a whole school instructional model which had been previously developed as a whole school This is embedded into our lesson planning and structure of all classrooms.

Maths had (and still have) common assessment expectations from Years 7-10, as outlined in our documentation, including problem-solving and application tasks.

We had two new Maths teachers start at our school in 2023.

What we achived

Numeracy Instructional Model

Numeracy Instructional Model

Brought back learning from Numeracy Learning Community - Day 2

Collaborative input from Maths KLA into design of Numeracy Instructional Model

We wanted our Numeracy IM to support our whole school IM, not replace it.

Our ‘Explain’ and ‘Explore’ sections are combined as these are considered a cycle in learning.

Draft created and provided to team for feedback.

Proficiencies as verbs’ - verbs relevant to SASC voted on to display

Numeracy Instructional Model made focus of Numeracy PLC Term 3 & 4

Stand up meetings

Drew, Casey and Rachel meet once a week for a stand up meeting.

Aim is to share progress, gain advice, provide direction and lead change.

We’ve found that this ‘brief check in’ keeps us on track and accountable.

Minutes taken and available on a shared drive for the team to view.

Observations

Observations

Observation template created, trialled by Rachel and Drew, and provided to all staff for feedback.

Observations embedded into PLC cycle 3. All staff have been observed in term 3.

Observation template has been utilised by other KLA areas also.

Numeracy PLC

Numeracy PLC

Numeracy was made the focus of our 3rd PLC cycle.

Staff chose either fluency, understanding, problem-solving or reasoning as their ‘crumb’.

Pre-testing indicated student ability in this area.

Explicit teaching of skills and regular tasks to practice and develop the skill.

Post testing and presentations to occur in the next week.

Enablers & Barriers

Enablers

Barriers

- Supportive and enthusiastic KLA team.

- Support from PLC Leading Teacher to implement a Numeracy focussed PLC.

- Numeracy being a focus of our AIP.

- Resources as recommended and/or provided by the NLC.

- NLC days held in Hamilton, which is over 2 hours from St Arnaud.

- Small KLA numbers mean that the workload in making changes to curriculum/teaching is greater.

- Having access to a similar, partner school may provide support and inspiration.

Where to now?

Plans for the future

  • We want to focus on classrooms reflecting the ‘big ideas’ and real world skills. This will include a change in mindset from purely outcomes-based to problem-solving.

  • There will be team teaching opportunities in 2024, as we will have two year 7 and year 9 classes.

  • We will be embedding coding into our curriculum as part of our step up program for years 7-10.
