The three general functions of education in a democracy are
1.
A complex civilization is too complex to be assimilated
- Must be broken into portions
- Schools must provide a simplified environment.
- Fundamental features are selected and capable of being responded by young.
- A progressive order is establish by using factors first acquired as means of gaining insight of what is more complicated.
2.
Purifying and idealizing the existing social customs.
- School has the duty to eliminate undesirable influences and should keep those that contribute to a better society.
- Counteract their influence in the ordinary social environment.
3.
Creating a wider and balanced environment
- The office of the school must balance elements in the social environment.
- Each individual must be given the opportunity to escape limitation in which he was born.
- An environment by which the young would be likely, if left to themselves, to be influenced.
- Individuals will be expose to different customs, communities, and traditions of others to create a new and broader environment.
