Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton get their energy from the sun using photosynthesis just like any other plant. It is then eaten by zooplankton and krill, then moved on down the food chain or web.

Emporer Penguin

(Apten adytes fosteri)

Secondary Consumer

75 kJ

Emperor Penguin

When a emperor penguin eats, it swims into the ocean and searches for its prey and chases it down until it gets it into its mouth. They will eat a ton in order to later just live off of the fat they got after eating so much. In order to have clean water they eat lots of snow for fresh water since the ocean water is so salty. They also eat krill small fish and small squid.

Antartic Squid

Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni

Secondary Consumer

Antartic Squid

The antartic squid will wrap around its prey to feast on it. It will chase it down until it can get its tentacles around the prey and then slowly put it in its mouth to eat. It diet consist of krill and small fish.

Killer whale (type D)

Orcinus orca

Orka

Type D

Killer whales swim and chase down their prey. They don't chew it, they swallow it whole. They may tear or shred it so they can swallow it. They need to eat a lot of food in order to survive. They will often hunt in pods to hunt down their prey. The feed on seals, penguins, small fish, and squid.

Silverfish

Pleuragramma Antarcticum

Secondary Consumer

75 kj

Silverfish

Silverfish just swim around until they find their prey, then hunt them down and eat them, krill that is. Smaller silverfish just live off of copepods.

Leopord Seal

Hydrurga leptonyx

Tertiary Consumer

7.5 kj

Leopard Seal

Leopard Seals will sit in waters near penguins and wait for them to go into the water and ten catch them and wave them around like a dog to kill them. The diet depends on the size of the seal. If a seal is larger, they can go for penguins, but if they are smaller they go for small fish, krill and squid.

Antartic Krill

Euphausia superba

Primary Consumer

750 kj

Antartic Krill

Krill float around in the water until they find phytoplankton which they latch onto and eat. They may also feed on small plants and algae found under the ocean. They get feasted on by many animals including whales, penguins, etc...

Antartica

Habitat Info

Where?

Antartica is located at the south pole on earth. As far south as you can go.

Ecosysytem?

The antartic water is always busy because phytoplankton is abundant in it. It feeds the mass majority of krill. Krill play an important role in the ecosystem since they feed most of the primary consumers, whales, penuins and sealsIt .

Abiotic Features?

Rain - very little so dry, wind - turn into storms, sunlight - feed the phytoplankton, temperature - extremely cold, soil composition and sea/ocean - where most animals are.

Climate?

Because it gets very little rain, it is considered a desert. It is the coldest continent on Earth. It is covered in snow and ice with freezing temperatures all year round. Violent winds can evolve into snow storms that last for days or even weeks making it almost unlivable for a human.
