MIND MAP

Stephanie Irwin

Who

am I?

  • I am the first child out of my family to go to university
  • I have unusually high standards for things especially friendships
  • I am a very strong believer of the word "no" in any situation

About ME

What I know about sexual assault:

Sexual Assault

  • I know that sexual assault has impacted many people's lives especially people that I know
  • I know that not many people report their sexual assault to the police because they're too afraid of what may happen if they speak up
  • I know that sometimes sexual assault leads to unwanted pregnancies, and that's when there's a higher need for abortions.
  • I'm hoping that in this class, we learn more about sexual assult and learn how people can speak up more about the topic

What I want to learn:

What I know about abortions:

  • I do not believe in abortions which is tough because in some situations like sexual assaults some people just need to have an abortion.
  • I grew up in a house where the word "abortion" wasn't spoken of, which to be honest I didn't know the word existed till I reached Grade 9.

Abortions

What I want to learn about abortions:

  • I am hoping that in class, we learn more about sexual assaults and abortions and learn maybe not to go with someone you don't really know or communicate with this someone, from the very start of what your intentions may be!

What I want to learn:

What I know about motherhood:

What I want to learn:

Motherhood

  • I know that motherhood isn't always what someone hopes it would be
  • I know that sometimes being a mother is caused by sexual assaults with no abortions

What I want to learn:

  • I want to hear people's stories of how they overcame their problems with becoming a mother through sexual assault
  • I would like to know more on how they coped

What I have learned so far about motherhood:

What I have learned so far

  • I learned that good mothers were at a certain standard in socety. For example good mothers are usually white and married.
  • I also learned that feminism plays a big part of mothering because of other people's opinions of motherhood.

What I know about feminism:

  • I know that feminism has alot to do with women's rights
  • I know that feminism can include movements for equality.

Feminism

What I would like to learn:

  • I don't know much on feminism, but I would like to know more on how feminism changed society and how women have come to voice their opinions

What I would like to learn:

What I have learned so far about feminism:

  • I have learned that feminism plays into the role of what gender you are. Like gender is being seen as a question of whether you are more masculine or feminine.
  • I learned that feminists are saying that people have characteristics from both the feminine category AND from the masculine category.

What I know about gender:

  • I know that gender consists more of male and females
  • I know that females are more feminist because that's what society says

Gender

What I would like to learn about gender:

  • I would like to learn more about the different genders
  • I would like to know how gender and feminism are so closely interrelated

What I want to learn:

What I have learned so far about gender:

What I have learned about gender:

  • I learned that gender is a classification of people who are put into categories of masculine and feminine.
  • I learned that gender is something we perform.
  • My viewpoint changed when I said I would like to learn about the different types of genders but I learned that it isn't the different types of genders, it's the different types of sexualities that I was referring to but I didn't really understand how to put it! But now I do.

What I know about sexuality:

  • I tend to get confused of the difference between sex and gender.
  • I know they are different but I can't seem to understand how.

Sexuality

What I want to learn:

  • I hope that this class will help me learn the difference between sex and gender

What I want to learn:

What I have learned so far about sexuality:

  • I learned that sexuality is the sexual aspect of being human. This includes the heterosexual and homosexual persons.
  • I learned that female sexuality is categorized as dirty and dangerous, whilst males are to do with the mind, feelings and behaviours, etc.

What I have learned so far:

What I know about discrimination:

  • I know that discrimination happens when one person is classified because of the culture or group

Discrimination

What I'd like to learn with discrimination and racism:

  • I would like to learn more about people's stories and how they've overcome the struggles they've been through.
  • I would like to know more on how discrimination started and where it originated from.

What I want to learn:

What I know about racism:

  • I know that racism and discrimination go hand in hand with negative things people say to people because of the color of their skin
  • I know that racism is mostly because of someone's color that they have racist slurs thrown at them in public.

Racism

What I would like to learn about racism:

  • I would like to learn other people's stories and how facing racism changed their lives.
  • I would also like to know who first identified racist slurs and how they knew to identify it!

What I want to learn:

What I know about Domestic Violence:

  • I know that domestic violence isn't only physical abuse but can be sexual, verbal and nonverbal abuse.
  • I know that domestic violence tends to happen to a person in an intimate relationship with the other person.

Domestic Violece

What I want to learn about Domestic Violence:

What I want to learn:

  • I would like to know more on how someone would find the resources to get out of a domestic violence situation.
  • I would also like to know what kind of resources are out there for someone
  • I'd like to know if there is enough resources out there for everyone in this type of situation or if the world needs more resources.
  • I'd like to know what happens to a person's kid in this type of situation, does it end up being a court battle?

What I know about activism:

Activism

  • I don't know a whole lot on acitivism but I do know that acitivism is campaigning for change.
  • I know that activists have a cause they want changed, and I know that activists sometimes parade around and hold up signs to protest against something they want change for.
  • I know the "Black Lives Matter" movement was a cause of activism.

What I want to learn:

  • I want to learn if there's something that connects all activists, even if they're causes for change are different. if there is something that connects them all.
  • I want to know if you have to be a realist to be an activist!

What I want to learn:

What I learned

I enjoyed reading about people's roles in activism like Julia Butterfly Hill and her rights to sit by a tree because they were going to cut it down and how it all started before she was an acitvist. I believe this has shown me a better understanding to what activism is like and how activism causes change. Although some of the things Julia did had consequences, it never stopped her from doing what she believed was right.

What I know about women's education:

  • I know that women's education first started out as something hard for women to access.
  • I know that Malala Yousafzai played a role in the shaping of women's education even though it didn't happen in Canada, it was very important to learn about world-wide.

Women's Education

What I want to learn:

  • I would like to learn how much women's education has developed over the years
  • I would also like to learn who else had a part in shaping the future of women's education.

What I want to learn:

What I know about childcare:

  • I know that childcare is hard to find in some places.
  • I know that sometimes you have to look around for various options for your child.

Childcare

What I want to learn about childcare:

  • I would like to learn how mothers manage emotionally with sending their kid(s) off to daycare or a nanny.
  • I would also like to learn how daycares are funded and if some of their funding comes from fundraising.

What I want to learn:

  • Immigration is so big in Canada and across the world.
  • Immigration takes away certain opportunities for us Canadians, like jobs and housing.
  • I think immigration can make Canada and the rest of the world so much better because immigrants have so much to bring to Canada, like their culture and ethnic backgrounds.

Immigration

  • When I was younger, I was told to always dress appropriate, meaning dress like a young girl.
  • I learned at a young age that my parents never taught me a lot about gender roles and even when I was a teenager, I stopped caring what I wore (ex. baggy sweatpants) because it was just some stupid role that society said was true, and men didn't own the right to who can wear what.
  • I know that men and women have specific gender roles that society wants to be accurate.

Gender Roles

Who Am I?

  • I am a woman with strong views of abortion, gender/gender roles and immigration.
  • I believe that everyone has the opportunity to grow and I think that this map has shown my growth from beginning to end.
  • I am a feminist, women go through so much stuff and we are so strong and resilient we deserve more credit.
