Wygant Family

The American Stew

BEGINNING

With my family being of Swedish and German heritage my family is just a small part of the big stew that America is. In America we have all races, heritages, and colors of people that make up the U.S.A.. My family was part of the second wave of immigration and came from Sweden. At this time World War I was happening and the whole of Europe was in war with each other causing a great wave of movement to escape this conflict. My family decided to come to America

ELLIS ISLAND

Wyant to Wygant

The Wyant family came to Ellis island and got their last name Americanized by adding the "g" which is really germenizing it. The story behind my last name change is that my great great great great great great great great great great GREAT grandpa, James Wygant couldn't read the guards handwriting and neither could the guard understand my great great great GREAT grandpa, James Wygant's voice. So in the end my great great great great grandpa signed off our last name as Wygant and Americanizing it.

Coming to America

IMMIGRANT TROUBLES

Ellis Island was one of the greatest obstacles for incoming European immigrants because of the great amount of people there, the diseases, and the guards. The guards would steal money and items off of incoming immigrants. There were many diseases and everyone was exposed to new diseases that their bodies had never fought before therefore diseases were spreading and creating sickness everywhere. There was a ton of people at Ellis Island and all different ages, races, and genders and that created conflict within the people. Once immigrants were set out into the U.S. they faced more problems like racism and gender equality. People in America didn’t like the Germans or Irish they drank too much and the Germans don’t speak English. Also in America women didn’t have the same rights as men.

THE ROUTE

My family came on a boat from Sweden over the rough Atlantic ocean to come to "The new world" and work for the Continental army.
