A central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is defined as a laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infection that is not related to an infection at another body site.

  • Before and after accessing or dressing the CVC

  • Use Tegaderm CHG dressing to cover the catheter site
  • Replace the dressing if the dressing becomes damp, loosened or visibly soiled.
  • Replace dressing no more than once a week unless they are soiled or loose.

Patient Cleansing

  • Bathe the patient daily with 2% Chlorhexidine

ADMINISTRATION SET REPLACEMENT

  • Replace IV administration sets (that are continually used) no more than every 96 hours or at least every 7 days.
  • Replace tubing used to administer blood/blood products or fat emulsions within 24 hours of initiating the infusion.
  • Replace tubing used to administer Propofol every 6-12 hours (when the vial is changed).

#SCRUBTHEHUB

  • Perform hand hygiene. Don clean or sterile gloves.
  • Scrub the hub with an alcohol prep pad for 10 to 15 seconds generating friction by scrubbing in a twisting motion. Use one prep pad per hub.
  • Allow the hub to dry. Prevent it from touching anything while drying.
  • Access the stopcock or injection port only with sterile devices.
  • Discard gloves and perform hand hygiene.
