Group Counseling Proposal for Elementary Students With Social Anxiety

Submitted by Mrs. Lori Walls-Culp

Intro

The following presentation is to propose a group counseling program for students ages 9-10 (3rd grade), who struggle with anxiety during social and academic situations at school.

Third grade in Ohio includes high stakes testing along with the third grade guarantee reading requirements. Third grade is also when students transition from a primary grade level to an intermediate grade level, which typically includes more independent work and problem solving.

Anxiety is not just a disorder that affects an adolescent on the inside. It affects every aspect of their life including but not limited to their social life, friendships, family relationships, behaviors at home and school, academic success, and more.

Statistics

"Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental and emotional problems in childhood and adolescence" (Wilde, 2011).

Statistics

Theory

"Although certain fears and anxiety may be both normative and transient in particular developmental periods, the level of fear or anxiety in some children exceeds developmental expectations, significantly undermining functioning at home, at school, and with peers" (Knott and Kriebe, 2003; Kazdin & Weisz, 1998)
