Astrology in the Elizabethan Era

What is Astrology?

Astrology is the branch of science and physics that studies the physical and chemical properties of any natural bodies outside the earth’s atmosphere. It is also the study of how the movements of the planets impact human events and the natural world.

Astrology was such a major part of citizens lives back in the Elizabethan era that even the queen had her own astrologer to predict her horoscope. Also agricultural astrology encourages poultry farmers to set up their chicken's eggs to hatch when it is a new moon.

Astrology in medecine:

Doctors used the stars and planets to predict medical diagnosis, an individuals weaknesses and prescribe cures. Medical astrology was used for body parts and illnesses.

Astrologers used the stars to also tell people what kind of person they would be and what kind of life and death they would have based on the alignment of the stars at the time of their birth. This is called a horoscope.

During the Elizabethan Era, people believed that the Earth was at the center of the universe and that the sun and other planets all revolved around the Earth. This is called the Geocentric theory which was proposed by Greek astronomer Ptolemy.

Astrology in Shakespeare's writing:

Shakespeare was greatly influenced by astrology in his writing. He referenced astrology as illusions in his stories. Shakepeare revealed a good deal of his personal feelings and philosophy in his Sonnets.

Astrology linked with magic:

In the Elizabethan era, astrology was greatly linked with magic and was believed to help them control events. The main goal of astrological magic was to create physical objects that will emit an effect from the power of the planets.
