The ottawa charter for health promotion is the most widely used health promotion framework and was developed after the world health organisation held an international conference on health promotion in 1986. The ottawa charter outlines five action areas, building healthy public policy, creating supportive environments, strengthening community action, developing personal skills and reorienting health services.
Smoking leads to disease and disability and harms nearly every organ of the body.
This action area focuses on the places where people live, work and play and also increasing peoples ability within these settings to make health-promoting choices. By having systems that reduce threats to health and allow people to live and work in places that are safe and away from things that can influence you to smoke or make bad health choices. By having supportive people around you it will positvely influence you not not smoke.

developing personal skills is aimed at improving the knowledge and skills of individuals so they are able to make more informed health decisions such as choosing not to smoke. They also have the capacity to be a positive influence on those around them. The development of personal skills requires a multi-sectoral approach to health promotion.
building healthy public policy is about the development of legislation, fiscal measures, taxation and organisational change that promotes health. Building healthy public policy involves implementing measures like increasing tobacco taxes which makes it harder for people to buy, enforcing smoke-free laws in certain areas, restricting tobacco advertising and funding tobacco prevention programs. These policies also empower individuals to make healthier choices and contribute to the overall decline in smoking prevalence over time.
Strenghtening community action is the empowerment of communities to identify and implement actions to address their health concerns. Community-based initiatives have played a crucial role in educating the public about the health risks associated with tobacco use. By increasing knowlegde and understanding within our communtities people are more likely to make informed decisons about tobacco and the dangers that come with it. By taking action in your community it can positively impact the health of others. Informational pamphlets, and hosted educational workshops at schools, community centers, and local events all help reduce tobacco use.
