Where did it begin:

F

  • Reading First Initiative was made in part of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001. It was established to make sure that the students were all able to read by their grade level by the third grade.
  • When RFI started they began reading in six different areas.

  • Oral Language
  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension
  • Fluency

Connection with Just Read, Florida! Initiative

Just Read, Florida!

  • This was establishes statewide in 2001. It also placed emphasis on six important areas in reading: Oral Language, Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.
  • The goal of JRF was to ensure that all students without a doubt the students would be able to read at or above their grade level.
  • The connection comes from the funding, JRF received $300 million from Reading First funding between 2003 to 2009.
  • Both of these programs where established to better the reading of the students.

Goals of RFI

  • Reading first was designed to encourage the use of evidence-based reading instructions.
  • The goal behind this funding and program was to have the students either reading at their grade level or above by the third grade.
  • Another goal is to improve the students reading skills by implementing scientific based research.

What do I think?

A

In my opinion, Reading First Initiative has a great purpose behind it that I feel has really help in the beginning when this first came about. I also feel that teacher lose out on the ability to make decisions in their classrooms, and not all students learn the same way. I think there could be a few changes that could be done to make this program successful.
