Artificial Intelligence

Can it develop itself?

Artificial Intelligence

Intro

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a computer system that has the ability to take on tasks that require human intelligence, activities such as decision-making, problem solving, language translation and much more!

How does it work?

AI uses a computer software to program itself using code. We give AI its first couple of scripts to program itself and usually from then on it would try teaching itself based on human's progress.

Benefits and Risks

Benefits and Risks

There are many benefits and risks of having AI in our daily lives. Fortunately most of them aren't in action yet, but many say it won't take long to actually be reality. Just recently, many scientific and technology experts signed a letter describing the effects of AI. They described both positive and negative aspects of AI.

Benefits

Benefits

  • AI could do tasks that humans could not do or it could complete tasks that humans may take an extended duration of time to complete.
  • AI could survive in environments that humans couldn't such as, deep spaces and ocean benthos which humans have not yet been able to complete research about.
  • AI can translate in multiple languages at an advanced level of speed.
  • AI can advance human intellignece by informing citizens of worldwide information using smart technology such as Ipads and Iphones.

Risks

Risks

  • Using AI, we can have the possibility of the end of the human race
  • Loss of employment in many different employment fields
  • Lack of sympathetic (emotional aspects) of education for school students
  • The cost to keep AI acting responsibly to control itself.
  • The reduced resources for humans but more technological resources for robots.

Key Concepts

Key Concepts

  • Artificial Intelligence: A.I. is the term that applies to any technique that enables computers to copy human intelligence, using logic (if/then rules), decision trees and machine learning
  • Machine Learning: The subcategory of A.I. that includes statistical techniques that enable machines to improve tasks with frequent experience throughout time.
  • Deep Learning: The subsection of Machine Learning which is composed of algorithms that permit software to train itself to perform tasks, like speech and image recognition, by exposing neural networks that contain a majority of data and information.
  • Singularity: The time or stage when superintelligent machines begin improving themselves without human involvement.

History

History

- IBM's Watson machine once beat two all-time champions

-In 1666, mathematician and philosopher, Gottfried Leibniz published his book Dissertatio de arte combinatoria in latin which consisted of the first phrases of programming language known to code most AI systems.

-In January of 2015, many AI experts including Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk signed an open paper warning researchers and creators not to create something that they won't be able to control.

History

History

-There are many AI experts and researchers who know many of several consequences that robots and super intelligent could have on us in the future. These researchers include Tesla CEO and founder, CEO of SpaceX, chairman of SolarCity, and the man behind Hyperloop, Elon Musk who recently publicized his 10 million dollar investment in 37 AI research projects to make sure that AI can never can take control of mankind and have the upper hand.

Timeline

Timeline

  • The term AI was coined by John McCarthy at a conference at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire in 1956.
  • In 1964-65, AI interest started dropping because of how tough of a field it was to manage and the advanced knowledge that was needed to create a functional and successful machine in those years. That period of time was known as the AI winter.
  • In 1973, U.S and British Government stopped funding undirected research into Artificial Intelligence because no one really thought it would work. Seven years later, they continued funding AI privately, little by little, and to this day AI is a multi billion-dollar company.
  • Luckily the AI winter and the Governmental funding started picking up in 1993, with MIT’s project to build a “humanoid” robot using the Dynamic Analysis and Replanning Tool (DART) process. This helped to pay back the US government for the funding costs from 1950 to 1993 and to continue funding AI by themselves. In 1997, the DeepBlue machine beat Kasparov. It was very obvious that AI was back on the top of the lists and so the US government continued funding AI publically and legally. This time it was known as “The Return of the Jed(AI)”

Big Question

Big Question

So now we look at our big question: "Can AI create itself"? With all the information that is gathered, I have learned that there is always new advances about AI. Although, many researchers have tried to create AI that can create itself, this research hasn't yet been completed succesfully. Even though there has been AI that has taught itself on how to develop, and mimic the humans developmental stages, more research still needs to be done.

Big Question

Big Question

Several experts that have dealt with technology, including the CEOs of Apple, Google and Tesla, all say that their research and developing crew have found something in AI that could possibly change the technology field and could help mankind enormously, however, they haven't released what they have discovered to the public. Many say that it is possible that AI can develop itself without us interfering in its developmental stages because AI has created and learned by itself previously. Proof of this was when late last year a robot assembled, created and coded another robot by creating a basic working network. Robots currently can create their own kind, but luckily, all robots and AI bots are coded to not create themselves and robots that do create themselves and increase the "Robot Population" would always be shut down. It is very important to always monitor robots and AI because if there is no one monitoring them, they could possibly take over humanity. Although it sounds like a scene from Terminator or iRobot, unfortunately it could be reality. AI uses Deep Learning to code itself.

Conclusion

Conclusion

In conclusion, I have learned that artificial intelligence uses Deep Learning to teach itself concepts that humans learn from childhood. At the beginning of my project, I did not have an abundance of information about technology and Artificial Intelligence. While doing this project, I have learned that AI, in a controlled environment can be very valuable to society. We can use these advances to make life easier, however, a lot of research still needs to be done on AI, so that we can use it to the best of our ability.
