Winston Churchill

  • Born in November 30, 1874,

Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England

  • Died in January 24, 1965, London

  • He was a British statesman, orator, and author who as prime minister (1940–45, 1951–55) rallied the British people during World War II and led his country from the brink of defeat to victory.

Historical context

  • World War II

"In a sense, the whole of Churchill’s previous career had been a preparation for wartime leadership. An intense patriot; a romantic believer in his country’s greatness and its historic role in Europe, the empire, and the world; a devotee of action who thrived on challenge and crisis; a student, historian, and veteran of war; a statesman who was master of the arts of politics, despite or because of long political exile; a man of iron constitution, inexhaustible energy, and total concentration, he seemed to have been nursing all his faculties so that when the moment came he could lavish them on the salvation of Britain and the values he believed Britain stood for in the world."

Courage

Churchill held one of the toughest posts during the Second World War; tougher still was the decisions he made to carry on until the very end of it.

What did he try to accomplish?

  • WWI: Defeat Turkey

  • WWII: Defeat Germany and the Nazy party

  • Keep the country united and strong

How did their plans turn out?

  • WWI: Defeat Turkey

- He failed and killed 73.485 people

  • WWII: Defeat Germany and the Nazy party

- He had a huge success and lead the Allies to win the war

  • Keep the country united and strong

- He was successful

If they failed, why?

  • WWI: Defeat Turkey

- He failed and killed 73.485 people

He didn't consider the Strait of Istanbul

when he attacked. He was, though, an

incompetent leader, once he assumed

a responsibility he shouldn't have.

He only considered the numbers and not

the strategy, which was the most important aspect.

What hardships did they go through?

1) After his huge failure in Turkey, nobody trusted his leadership skills anymore, so he had to win everybody's trust and confidence again.

2) England was going through a very hard time and people were willing to surrender and make a deal with Hitler. Because of that, for achieving his goals, he had to convince the population and the Parliament that winning the war was still an option. In this part, Churchill used a lot of his leadership skills that were already mentioned.

What makes them good or bad leaders?

  • Good:

- He learned from his failures in

Turkey

- He managed to gain everybody's

trust again, what was even harder

than for the first time.

- His leadership skills made him highlight in world's history
