Self-doubt

Self-doubt

Self doubt is an important theme in the midwife's apprentice because Alyce believes there is no place in the world for her. She thinks that she can not deliver babies and she runs away.

"For she dreamed of nothing, she hoped for nothing and she expected nothing."

"It was as cold and dark inside her as out in the frosty night"

Quote

Context

This is what the book says about Alyce's thoughts at the start of the book, when she was settlin for the night in the dung heap.

How is the quote relevant

The first quote states "she dreamed of nothing, expected nothing and hoped for nothing", this tells us how much she doubted that anything would happen to her and also that she didn't want anything to happen.

The second quote is a metaphor saying how plain, dark and uneventful the outside night was, the author is comparing how Alyce was feeling to the night around Alyce, stating that Alyce doubted herself and her life.

Perserverance

Perseverance

All through her journey, Alyce faces problems that she finds hard to overcome, from living in a dung heap to being rejected by her only option, the midwife. Alyce perseveres through all her problems to find a solution.

“And if you don’t let me in, I will try again and again. I can do what you tell me and take what you give me, and I know how to try and risk and fail and try again and not give up. I will not go away.”

Quote

Context

This quote is said by Alyce when she went back to the midwife for the second time, after she was rejected.

How is the quote relevant

As this is the second time Alyce has gone back to persuade the midwife to let her in, she is determined not to be turned away and she says that she will keep trying until she succeeds. This quote shows Alyce's strength and determination through hard times, which represents her character of strong perseverance.

Believing in yourself

Believing in yourself

Throughout the text Alyce has no belief in herself, yet as the book carries on she starts to build up her self confidence up slowly, with Will and Edward to help encourage her on.

“Just because you don’t know everything don’t mean you know nothing.”

Quote

“I don’t know of any stories.”

“For sure you do. Everyone does.”

The first quote is said by Will when Alyce says that she doesn't know anything.

The second quote is said by Edward when Alyce visits him at the manor and Alyce can't think of any stories.

Context

How is the quote relevant

The first quote is said to Alyce by Will to convince her that she is smarter than she thought. Will was trying to get Alyce to think better of herself and what she could do.

The second quote is said by Edward and is not only relevant to Alyce but to everyone who thinks they don't know anything, believing in yourself is important if you want to do well in what you do. In the line "For sure you do", Edward is reminding Alyce that she is smarter than she thinks and that she must believe in herself to find an answer.

Search for identity

Search for identity

Throughout the book Alyce is trying to find out who she is and where she belongs, she wants to know where she came from and what she will become.

"I know what I want, I want a full belly, a content heart and a place in this world."

Quote

How is the quote relevant

This quote reflects Alyce's identity because she had never thought about who she was before or what she wanted. When she was asked this by Magister Reese she had to think about it, she was then able to identify who she really was and what she wanted.
