1950's

By: Armeen, Britney & Kishan

Introduction

Introduction

The fifties was a time of great development in technology. The inventions created in the fifties offered great benefits to people, this starts with the technology that we use today

Most pieces of technology in our households today were first created back in the fifties

In our presentation, we will be talking about the importance of the technology that was invented during the 1950's and how it has improved and evolved to this day

entertainment IN THE 50'S

Many different forms of technological entertainment were invented or grew in popularity during the fifties, these include:

  • television
  • transistor radio
  • first program running computer
  • optical fiber
  • drive in movies
  • jukeboxes & Vinyls

Entertainment

Television

The remote:

the first remote intended to control a television was created in 1950

  • called "Lazy Bones"
  • connected to T.V with a wire

the first wireless remote control was invented in 1955

  • called the 'flashmatic'

Before the remote was created, you had to physically get up to the T.V to change channels

  • The first T.V was made in 1925 by a Scottish inventor
  • popularity of television came in the 50's
  • TVs were very popular in the US, southern Ontario and some parts of southern British Columbia
  • people bought TVs and they lifted the antennas to get American signals
  • the average price of a T.V when came into popularity was really expensive averaging $1000 for a box T.V
  • as sales grew and T.V's were advancing, prices started to reduce to become more affordable
  • Shows and movies would be in black and white as coloured television didn't come out until the late 60's - however, previews of coloured shows were being introduced
  • T.V changed the way media was shown, it was used as a form of entertainment but also educated many people - TV exposure could destine one's political career and start social movements

Computers

Even though the first computer was created in 1936, it wasn't until the 1950s where the first computer with running program and ability to store memory was created in 1955

  • micro-programming was invented in the 50s
  • magnetic core memory were placed in computers in 1955
  • this made computers faster, reliable , and easier to manufacture

Computers

Music

Music

The First Transistor Radio was first announced to be created in 1948 by Bell Telephone

  • a transistor radio is a portable, amplifying and switching electronic device that is used to play music
  • in 1953, the first transistor radios were sold and over the next few decades the radios became very popular and became smaller and more portable
  • it was very popular with teens as it was easy for them to carry around and listen to music

The 1950s marked the beginning of Rock N Roll and was loved by teens, Vinyls and Jukeboxes became very popular as well and started to appear in diners

  • most popular artists of the 50s was Elvis Presley

THE COLD WAR

Technology/Weapons Used in the Cold War

Many new strategies and weapons were invented and used in WWII and continued to improve as it followed into the Cold War.

  • AK-47 was the most commonly used weapon in the Cold War
  • Radars - detected incoming air attacks as most of fighting occurred in air
  • Missiles - launched from planes or on ground vehicles
  • Bombs - dropped from aircraft's
  • Tanks

Satellite

Sputnik 1

The Russians launched the first artificial satellite (Sputnik 1) into space, with the Americans following in 1958 (Explorer 1)

  • this began the Cold War Space Race between the two nations
  • both are no longer in orbit
  • Sputnik's function - primary function was to place a radio transmitter into orbit around the Earth
  • Explorer 1's function - step and start into space race w/ Russia, also had cosmic ray detector designed to take measurements of radiation in the space near Earth

Today, artificial satellites are used in weather forecasting, T.V Transmissions, supplying navigation data to air crafts and ships & for military purposes

transportation in the 50's

Transportation

New forms of transportation became high in demand and the American auto industry reflected the post-war prosperity of the late-1940s and the 1950s.

As the Great Depression and WWII had come to an end, Americans started to experience great economic growth, making them able to afford automobiles

Transportation that started to become commercial and popular during the 50s were:

  • cars
  • motorcycles
  • jets
  • planes

aircraft

The aVRO aRROW

In 1958, The First Supersonic Jet was created, the Avro Arrow

  • A plane designed to attack enemy aircraft, especially enemy bombers - it's specific purpose was to shoot down Russian nuclear-armed bombers
  • capable of flying at twice the speed of sound (Mach 2)
  • was to have exceptionally powerful state-of-the-art engines
  • canceled in February 1959 by the government of PM Diefenbaker

THE BLACK BOX

The First Black Box was made in 1953 - a black box is a device to record cockpit noise and instruments during flight, it records flight data which can be used to investigate any possible airplane crashes

Inventor: David Warren

Autos

cars/Automobiles

Cars received popularity during late 1940's to 1950s

  • The American manufacturing economy switched from producing war-related items to consumer goods at the end of World War II, by the end of the 1950s, one in six working Americans were employed either directly or indirectly in the automotive industry
  • The United States became the world's largest manufacturers of automobiles
  • Many innovations were introduced or refined in the 1950s to make driving safer and more comfortable
  • new businesses were created to support the 1950s car culture - drive in movies, drive-thru's and drive-in restaurants
  • Highway System was expanded beginning in 1955, with bigger,multi-lane highways to allow for increased speeds and more vehicles

Chevrolet (Chevy) Corvette

The first Chevy Corvette was invented in 1953

  • one of the world's first sports car
  • originally made to display at New York Auto Show
  • still in production
  • Coupe & Convertible
  • one of the least-changed models in appearance

daily life & work

Daily Life/work

The fifties was a great decade filled with many technological creations that help us in many ways; we've talked about technology in forms of entertainment, transportation, during the Cold War, and now the importance of the ones that people used and still use today, in their everyday lives.

  • first credit card
  • first photo copy machine
  • heart pacemaker
  • ballpoint pen
  • microchip

The First Credit Card

In 1949, a business man named Frank McNamara forgot his wallet while dining out at a fancy restaurant. To ensure this embarrassing situation would never happen again, he thought of a brilliant idea of a charged card which would allow consumers to pay back at the end of each month - which soon became a significant worldwide use

  • founded Diner's Club International and launched it's first charge card in 1950
  • the convenience of the card made it become popular
  • following was the American Express Company who launched their first credit card in 1958

Heart Pacemaker

  • invented in 1957 and first wearable heart pacemaker came that same year
  • gets implanted in your chest
  • created by John Hopps
  • designed to be attached to the organ during open heart surgery or intravenously when the chest was closed
  • a machine that jump start the heart and keep it beating

The Heart pacemaker is one of the world's greatest inventions as it extended the lives of people, who just years before it was made, would not have survived
