My family history consists of families that were established in Europe later immigrating to Canada. Firstly for the Carr’s, George Carr arrived alone in Canada from Yorkshire, England, in 1910. He immigrated to Calgary, Alberta, but just a few short years later moved to Victoria, British Colombia. At the time, immigration to the “Last Best West” was in full swing, and industrialization was growing, providing a stable working economy. George Carr came to be prosperous and as a way to start a new life. On the other side of my family tree, the Mastrodicasa’s arrived after the second world war, in 1952. They arrived as an opportunity for financial gain, to be prosperous. The Mastrodicasa’s, my great grandparents and their kids were from Italy. All of the Mastrodicasa’s settled in Toronto together; family values were highly promoted, so the sense of being a pack together in a new city was the ideal way for them to immigrate smoothly. The large family was caused by the lack of birth control and protection at the time. However, they first arrived at Ellis Island by boat, later moving to Canada. The second world war caused changes to the ideals and the family working dynamic that Italians still did not support. Overall, there were still high levels of discrimination and prejudice against Italian people. Next, the Bisceglia’s arrived in waves beginning at the turn of the century and into the mid-1960s. The vast majority of them immigrated to Massachusetts; however, a hand full of them decided to go to Toronto, including my grandfather, Celestino Bisceglia. Modern inventions and upgrades to preexisting contraptions made things like travel smoother, so instead of a long boat ride, he took a plane ride across the Atlantic. The economic climate was fine at the time; however, the discrimination against immigrants was still present. These are all immigrants, all major figures in my family, and all individuals that have and will continue to arrive have an impact on the Canada we see today.
