He was convicted of multiple sexual assaults all of which involved a weapon
His second sexual assault in 2005 involved a torture session with a toilet plunger and a 24-year-old Edmonton woman
Crime Committed
Sentence given
Zimmerman was sentenced to six years in the Bowden Institution in Alberta, Canada
He spent three years in prison and was released early under the condition that he be monitored for two years by a police high-risk offender program
He also had to stay at an approved address and be there at particular times
Opinion on the Case
It seems like he recieved a very lenient sentence considering what he's done
It was also a mistake allowing him to be released early considering he is described as a high-risk offender
It can especially be seen as a mistake when you realize that he breached the conditions of his release and was a fugitive for a while
Suggested Sentence
Based on the information given on his crime, it seems that his sentence was most likely based on section 272(2)(a)(ii) of the Criminal Code which states that a second offence of sexual assault with a weapon is indictable for a sentence of seven years
In my opinion, he should have been convicted under section 273(2)(b) which states in any other case the sentence would be imprisonment for life
My decision comes from the fact that Zimmerman didn't just inflict wounds but tortured the woman for several hours
