Camels / Camelus

Camel

By: Camille

Camels live China, Mongolia,North America, the Middle East, and Australia. Camels are very clever at finding food in their harsh desert environment. Each half of the split upper lip moves independently, so camels can get near the ground for eating short grass. These tough but flexible lips can break off and eat vegetation such as thorns or salty plants, they even eat fish. Camels reproduce once every two year.

The Desert Tortoise

(Gopherus agassizii)

Tortoise

Leah D

The desert tortoise is an amazing animal. The average life span of a desert tortoise is over 40 years! This tortoise is on the smaller end, weighing in at about 18 pounds, and 15 inches. They primarily live in rocks and other inclosed areas in the desert. But, as it is very sad to see this species slowly dissapear, you can adopt one as your pet!

sidewinders have short bodies, but they have very large fangs for a rattlesnake. The raised scales above their eyes resemble horns, scientists think these 'horns' may help protect the snake's eyes from the hot sun. These snakes can travel up to 18 miles per hour.

Cougar/ Mountain Lion

Scientific name: Puma Concolor

Niche: Ecological niche, they have importance as top predators within their ecosystems. They have a role in controlling large populations.

Eating habits/ Predatation: They are true carnivores, feeding only on other animals.

Mating habits/courtship: breed at any time of year although most births occur in July and August, after about three months' gestation. Females can have their first litter at two and one-half to three years of age, and breed roughly every two years.

Interesting facts (camouflages, strategies, mimics, houses, etc): The cougar holds the Guiness record for the animal with the highest number of names, and They are the fourth largest cats in the world.
