Mental Illness Stereotypes

Comparison

Fear

The Issue

Demeaning stereotypes of those suffering from mental health are too often portrayed in the media, making the recovery process much more painful.

Recovery

Comparison

Not Sick Enough

Movies and TV shows often outline the worst possible place that the sufferer could be in. This, in turn, sets the idea in the viewers mind that their situation could be a lot worse.

Fear

Shame/Embarrassment

The media further isolates the sufferer by making mental illness appear as a taboo topic. Those that are suffering can feel guilty and shameful over a condition that is ultimately out of their control. Further shame also keeps people from confessing when they are hurting or need extra support.

Recovery

Fantasized Idea of Recovery

The way that recovery is portrayed in the movies is not accurate to the way that recovery often goes down. Recovery is not a linear line of progress and each persons journey to better health is unique.
