Solar System

The sun and the celestial bodies that revolve around it are together called as a solar system. It consists of a large number of bodies such as planets, comets, asteroids and meteors.Let us learn about them.

SUN

SUN

  • The sun is the nearest star from us.
  • It is the main source of heat and light for all the planets specially Earth
  • The Sun is located at the center of our solar system, and Earth orbits 93 million miles away from it.
  • The Sun's magnetic field spreads throughout the solar system via the solar wind.

Mercury

MERCURY

  • It is nearest planet to the Sun and the smallest planet present in our solar
  • It is very difficult to observe it, as most of the time it is hidden in the glare of the Sun.
  • Mercury has no satellite of its own.

Venus

VENUS

  • It is nearest planet to Earth and It is the brightest planet visible in the night sky.
  • It is also called a morning or an evening star, although it is not a star.
  • Venus rotates on its axis from east to west.
  • Venus has no moon or satellite of its own.

EARTH

  • It is the only planet in the solar system on which life exists.
  • Earth appears blue green due to the reflection of light from water and landmass on its surface.
  • The axis of rotation of the Earth is not perpendicular to the plane of its orbit. The tilt is responsible for the change of seasons on the Earth.
  • It has only one moon or satellite of its own.

MOON

  • Moon is a natural satellite of Earth.
  • A moon is a celestial body that makes an orbit around a planet.
  • The Moon’s distance from Earth is about 240,000 miles (385,000 km).
  • There is no air on moon.

Did You Know ?

On July 21, 1969 the American astronaut, Neil Armstrong, landed on the moon for the first time.He was followed by Edwin Aldrin

MARS

  • Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun – a dusty, cold, desert world with a very thin atmosphere.
  • It looks somewhat reddish and, so, it is also known as the red planet.
  • Mars has two small natural satellites.
  • There are no rings around Mars
  • Mars is one of the most explored bodies in our solar system

JUPITER

  • It is the largest planet of the solar system. It rotates very rapidly on its axis.
  • Jupiter has a large number of satellites. And also has faint rings around it.
  • It is about 1300 times larger than that of earth and its mass about 318 times than that of our Earth

SATURN

  • Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest planet in our solar system.
  • It is yellowish colored planet.
  • There are beautiful rings around this planet, which are not observed in any other planets.
  • It is the least dense among all the planets. Its density is less than that of water.

URANUS

  • It is the one of outermost planet of the solar system.
  • Uranus is known as the “sideways planet” because it rotates on its side.
  • It is an Ice Giant planet and nearly four times larger than Earth.
  • Uranus has 27 known moons, most of which are named after literary characters.

NEPTUNE

  • It is the outermost planet of the solar system.
  • It's more than 30 times as far from the Sun as Earth is.
  • It's more than 30 times as far from the Sun as Earth is.
  • Neptune is our solar system's windiest world

Other Members Of the Solar System

Some Other Members Of the Solar System

There are some other Members of the Solar System like Asteroids,Comets,Meteorites etc.let us learn about them

Asteroids

ASTEROIDS

  • Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun
  • Asteroids aren’t all round like planets. They have jagged and irregular shapes.
  • Some asteroids are hundreds of miles in diameter, but many more are as small as pebbles.
  • Most asteroids are made of different kinds of rocks, but some have clays or metals, such as nickel and iron.

Comets

COMETS

  • Comets are cosmic snowballs of frozen gases, rock and dust that orbit the Sun.
  • Comets orbit the Sun just like planets and asteroids do, except a comet usually has a very elongated orbit.
  • Comets are very small in size relative to planets. Their average diameters usually range from 750 meters .

Meteors

METEORS

  • A Meteor is a streak of light in the sky caused by a meteoroid crashing through Earth’s atmosphere.
  • Meteoroids are lumps of rock or iron that orbit the sun.
  • Even the smallest meteors are visible from many kilometers away because of how fast they travel and how brightly they shine.

Artificial Satallites

ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES

  • An artificial satellite is an object that people have made and launched into orbit using rockets.
  • They are launched from Earth.
  • They revolve around the earth much closer than moon.
  • Artificial satellites have many practical applications. They are used for weather, television and radio signals.
