TYPES

TRADITIONAL MANIPULATIVES

TRADITIONAL MANIPULATIVES

Traditional manipulative media are often seen in classrooms for children in the early grades. This is because these media serve as the children's first sensory learning experience, and social learning experience in the case of group toys. The use of traditional manipulatives decreases in upper grade classrooms as the knowledge of the learners becomes more dynamic.

DIGITAL MANIPULATIVES

DIGITAL MANIPULATIVES

Advancements in technology have paved the way for the enhancement of manipulative media. This merging between traditional manipulatives and computational devices creates a new type of system, namely digital manipulatives, which extends toward a larger age range of learners as well as many other applications aside from common classroom subject areas.

ADVANTAGES

It teaches underlying values and skills.

Problem-solving, patience and attention span, critical thinking, creativity, concentration etc.

Students feel more capable and competent.

Because they do things on their own, and discover things on their own, they feel less dependent to their teachers.

They will see real life applications of concepts

They will see real life applications of concepts

Rather than teaching them concepts, manipulatives allow them to literally grasp each situation and they will feel the relevance of the concepts.

Can keep the students occupied.

Attracts a lot of attention, and can keep it as long as it is developmentally appropriate.

Easier for students to understand and reflect on the topic.

Since everything happened under their control, it is easier for them to analyze what they did and it allows them to “play around the concepts”.
